Pregnant and BFing

Anyone else?

My DD is 10 months old and still BF.  I am drinking a ton of water and making sure I eat a ton of food to help keep my supply up.  m/s hasn't kicked in yet but I'm worried how I'm going to keep this up if it shows.

Are you doing anything different to help with your supply?

Thank you.  It has been a source of stress for me but I really want to keep BFing so I'm giving it my all.

  • I am, but down to only once/day.  He is still acting as though nothing has changed, but I have to think that my supply has or will decrease soon.

first, many, MANY props to you for keeping it up. :)

second, i'd check out both the BF board and the attachment parenting board. the AP board is home to a lot of people who are big on BF, even with more than one kid. and if you haven't already, maybe talk to someone at your local La Leche League. i bet they have lots of advice.

After I posted here I thought I'd have better luck on the AP board.   I'm just waiting it out here first.  I haven't contacted LLL yet but I have read some great articles from their website.  According to one article I am supposed to eat 300 extra calories for the unborn baby and 500 extra calories for my BF baby.  That's SOO much food!  haha!

  • I am still BFing DD, but she is 20 months, so it is a little different.  There is no way I'm getting an extra 800 calories a day, but DD eats lots of solids now so it isn't necessary.   She still nurses 3-4 times a day.  She is getting ready to drop her nursing session after her nap.  There is lots of great info on www.kellymom.com  on nursing through a pregnancy and tandem nursing.  DD doesn't act like my supply has taken a hit yet, but I'm sure it is coming soon.  Good luck!

  • I'm 7 weeks and still nursing my 15 mo old. I nursed all the way through one of my previous pregnancies, and tandem nursed my newborn and toddler for 6 months. Your supply will eventually decrease, there really isn't much you can do about it, at least in my experiences. Keep drinking water and eating well, and make sure when you notice that your supply is dwindling, that you are making sure your baby is getting sufficient foods from other sources. My daughter was 9 mos when I found out I was pregnant with my 2nd, so I know the panic thinking "But she's still a baby!" But everything worked out, even though my supply went away completely by 20 weeks.

  • I'm also still breastfeeding, but I haven't been doing anything to keep my supply up.  My supply has definitely dropped a lot, but I'm just pushing the frozen milk I have in my freezer.  My son isn't thrilled with this change, but he'll be one on Friday so I'm not hugely concerned about how much I'm producing.  I had planned to let him wean himself whenever he was ready, but honestly I can't imagine trying to nurse a toddler and a newborn so I'm hoping he'll wean himself as my milk supply continues to drop.  He's still getting plenty at night and in the morning, but since I have stopped pumping he doesn't get much during the day (only a concern on the weekends), so I just keep pushing the bottle/sippy of frozen milk.

I've had a lot of m/s and it can be tough. I've found that nursing tends to make it worse so as soon as he's done nursing I often have to throw up.

It took 3 1/2 long years, but we finally got our little miracle!

  • I'm 13 weeks and my son will be a 11 months in a couple days.  I have done everything I can to keep my supply going but it has dropped significantly.  I work and pump milk and pumping provides only a few oz a day now (my son drinks 10 oz while we are apart and I used to pump about 8 oz).  My frozen milk got me through until a couple weeks ago and now he has some breastmilk while we are apart and some formula.  Days we are together my son mostly still breastfeeds but we try and give him an oz or 2 of formula after feedings when he does not seem satisfied.  It was really hard for me to supplement but I finally realized my body just can't make enough milk for him and support the growing baby.  It is possible to keep going but you also have to be willing to realize your body has limits.  I planned to see a nutritionist to make sure I was eating everything I could to help support everything my body is doing but I just have not followed through and for my supply it might be a bit late.  I would suggest seeing a nutritionist and a lactation specialist as soon as possible if you can.
  • I am PG and nursing my 16 month old - but we are down to once, maybe twice a day, and my supply (which is normally enough to feed 2 babies) is down to almost nothing - but she eats a ton of solids and only nurses before bed/sometimes naps. My M/S has been wicked and I have lost over 20lbs, but I just try and drink water (vitamin water is a great way to get extra nutrients and some of those extra calories - this is on the suggestion of my midwife - I really like the strawberry kiwi flavour. I cut it half and half with plain water and get more water in that normally stays down pretty well.) and eat when I can.
  • I am still BFing my 10 month old, but my supply is way down and my letdown is way slower than it used to be. Bfing hasn't been the center of my DD's nutritional world for a while now though. She has always gotten some formula, and get's about 16 oz a day now, plus table food. BFing is now mostly for comfort and bonding now, and I'm alright with that.

  • I'm still bfing my 5 month old.  I've never had a problem with my supply so I am really not looking forward to it dropping.  I'm trying to pump as much as I can now so that I can get a stash so he can still get BM, but I'm starting from nothing so we'll see how that goes.  Does the drop usually happen early?  I thought it was more like the middle of the pregnancy?
  • I was still nursing my daughter when I got pregnant, but she was right around 2 years old.  I wasn't worried if my supply tanked and I was ready to start weaning her anyway.

The hardest part about nursing while pregnant for me wasn't morning sickness but sore nipples.  A few weeks after my BFP my nipples got really sore and I couldn't stand how it felt when she latched on.

    Good luck.

  • Thanks ladies.  I haven't had any supply problems yet (knock on wood).  Really, I just want to make it at least 2 more months before any problems (with supply) arise.

I have read that 2nd trimester is when supply issues arise so that will at least give my DD to 12 months before the dip.  *fingers crossed*

  • I'm still BF my 7 month old.  I'm doing the same thing as you & chugging as much water as I can & eating lots of calories to help keep my supply up.  DD seems to be nursing shorter & shorter...I'm hoping my supply is dropping.  He still seems satisfied, so as long as he is I'm just going to keep doing what I'm doing.
