I shouldve bit my tongue...

So know how last week I was asking about cutting down on napping for DS since he still took a good long morning nap AND a afternoon nap...well I spoke too soon!

For the past 4 days, N refuses to take a morning nap and his afternoon naps are iffy too! What happened to my baby that would sleep from 9-11am guaranteed?! So I guess my question now is when your LO's cut out naps did they just stop napping cold turkey one day or did you just realize they didnt need that nap anymore? Should I keep attempting to get him to nap or just give in? He sits in his crib and will cry, talk, bang on the rungs, etc. Apparently yesterday he was so against his morning nap that he threw himself out of his crib (okay, probably not what happened but this is what I am imagining to help with my mommy guilt lol). Any suggestions?

Sometimes I feel inept as a mother, like this should be common sense but my brain just isnt working anymore...

Re: I shouldve bit my tongue...

  • Figuring out the transition is a rough couple of days. If you don't think he's tired at 9, try putting him down around 11. Also, it wouldn't hurt to wear him out for a few days so he'll be too tired to fight you at 11. If he's still not tired at 11, try 12. Good luck.

  • That's a bummer that he's stopped napping. I know my kids went through *phases* with their naps too, though.

Do you think maybe he's ready for just 1 nap a day? When my kids went down to 1 nap/day it was always after lunch. So anywhere between 12-1:00. Then they'd sleep for 2-3 hours.

It always helped me to be consistent when establishing a new routine, which I know can be hard for you with Dr.'s appointments.

I hope he starts sleeping for you again!

  • I definitely think at his age he still needs a nap.  What time does he get up in the morning and what time are you putting him down for his nap?

C is usually ready for a nap 3-4 hours after he gets up for the day.  If I put him down on the days I work he sleeps for 1.5 to 2 hours because I have to wake him to take him to the sitter.  On the days that DH or I don't work he will sleep for 3-3.5 hours.

The thing that seems to help us the most is consistency.  As long as we put him down for a nap at relatively the same time each day he is willing to take one.  Occasionally he refuses his nap and I give in, but more often than not he needs to take one.  We always have story time before nap time for 30 minutes and that calms him down and gets him ready for sleep.

  • I'm guessing that Nick is trying to go to one nap a day and this is how he's telling you.  Tyler used to nap from 10-12 like clockwork with a second shorter nap in the afternoon, but one day (out of the clear blue) he quit napping in the morning.  After a couple days of that, I just kept him up a little later each day till he was going down at 12:30 instead of 10.  He was just about Nicholas's age when he did this.

Now he's over 18 months and still takes one nap every day, after lunch, for about 3 hours.  The first few days of transitioning to it are hard but it should work out.

I'm thinking this is what he is going to do-- the thought of keeping him up till 12:30 is exhausting haha but I guess a longer afternoon nap will be more manageable in the long run

Thanks for all the suggestions ladies!

Don't keep him up till 12:30 the very first day  :)  I'd gradually move naptime back, by maybe a half hour at a time, till you find the time that works for him.

  • DS started going down to one nap right around 11 months. But he will take a 2-3 hour nap, which makes it nice on the days I am off work. Nap time for baby = nap time for mommy.

I hope the  nap transition goes easily!
