Rash on neck, advice needed

K has a red rash on her neck from her massive amounts of drool and spit up.  Pedi has assured me that the rash is caused from this, and the area just needs to be kept as dry as possible. Right now, we are going through bibs like wildfire, and I alternate between putting vaseline and buttcream on her neck, which helps, but doesn't totally clear it up.  Has anyone else had to deal with this?    If so, what seems to work best for you?

Re: Rash on neck, advice needed

  • Went through it with DS and now with DD. I used baby powder on DS's neck and it helped some to keep it dry, but I haven't started doing that with DD yet. We soak through bibs in like 30 minutes. It's ridiculous! I change her clothes continually to try to keep her dry, but she still looks rashy most of the time.

  • DS gets a rash on his chin from drool and I put my extra Lansinoh on it.  Works well for us and helps keep a barrier between his drool and skin.

  • My DS had a rash, too, and our pedi suggested 1% hydrocortizone cream. It cleared it up pronto. Keeping a teething baby's neck dry is like keeping the waves off the beach... practically impossible. I tried to put some powder on his chest and neck before bed and all that meant was I had a cakey mess under there the next morning. Just do what you can! Good luck!

  • I just went through this for the past 2 weeks and finally took LO in to see the pedi. She recommended a couple of things:

    1. limit baths: wipe area with wet washcloth (no soap)

    2. keep area lubricated with Lanolin (Lanoish: the type you put on sore nipples when BF) that type is safe for babies if they get it in their mouth.

    3. really irritated areas need 1% hydrocortizone (sp?) 2x/day

I used this treatment and the area was better within about 2 days. I now just keep Lanolin on it about 2x/day and before he goes to sleep.

Love it, so true.  I have tried powder too, usually put it on after a bath, before putting vaseline on it for the night.  I haven't tried the hydrocortizone cream though, sounds like maybe I should try that.

Hecky, I do lurk on here everyday, and post occasionally.  I have seen the drooler bibs and they are adorable, and I know you gals give them rave reviews.  If I can't get things cleared up soon, I may try to order some.

  • Thanks ladies, this is all good advice.  I didn't think about trying the Lanolin either.

  • We're going through this to.  The doctor recommended aquaphor & baby powder although its not working.  I'm trying to change bibs constantly & his clothes because he is ALWAYS wet.  I'll have to try the hydrocorizone cream & see if that works.  Good luck!!

  • Our pedi told us to use cornstarch on her neck folds.

  • I know this sounds bizarre but monistat sells a chaffing gel.  It goes on a gel, rub it or blow on it and it turns into powder.  I use it Eli's neck all the time and it totally works!  Give it a try!
