We started with an open cup around 6 months. Now, O can do it on his own, I just need to keep my hand under because once he's done he just lets go.
For on the go I have a straw sippy that he has been working on but I am planning on getting an aluminum one so that I don't have to worry too much if I leave it in the hot car. I really haven't had the need for a cup on the go yet, wherever we have been I've just gotten an open cup for him.
And FYI - the traditional sippy cups are not great, they use the same muscles for sucking as they do for pacis and such which don't help with speech development. Using open and straw cups help to build the muscles that are used when talking.

We use the Foogo Phases Tritan straw bottle by thermos (long name, I know!). It's great because it keeps milk cold, doesn't spill, and is fairly easy to clean.
