MOD: Where to begin?

If you are involved with March of Dimes...where did you begin? Did you begin with a donation? walk? friends and family? volunteering? a local meeting? Have online donations worked?

I have been thinking about this for awhile and have checked the March of Dimes website. I would like to know what others are doing. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. TIA

Re: MOD: Where to begin?

  • In 2007 we signed up for a walk and contacted the local chapter. the next year we were asked to a comittee meeting after mentioning at the 2007 walk to the coordinator we wanted to more involved. That is how we got involved in the comitee end of things. Our daughter was nominated to be an ambassador in 2008, 2009, 2010 and again 2011 for our city/local chapter. I think you can find the numbers and email addresses to your local chapter from the web.

we have always done online fundraising since the change went from walkamerica to march for babies. We raise most our money by online fundraising.

If you do decide to be involved wether by, volunteering, donating money, or walking (or all of the above) I really would like to say thank you for wanting to support the MoD mission.

It is really greta you want to be involved.

  • In 2010 we walked for the first time. I signed up online and asked for friends and family to join us in the walk and donate if they could. I never went to a local meeting, it was to hard at the time to get out with DD (she was only 6 months old). We did go to the walk, it was chilly that morning, so we bundled her up, and sleep the entire time.

This year we are walking with a big group of local bumpies/nesties. We created a website and have asked for donations. Our walk is in May and we all hope it's nice and warm this year. You don't really have to go to any of the local meetings, unless you want too.

  • March of Dimes is my husband and my charity of choice. We donate every year. This year we decided to do the March for Babies.

We formed a small team. Set up the website. It was really easy. Last weekend was our walk. The tree of us (myself and two friends, plus our husbands) raised nearly $2000! It is amazing how people really want to donate if they are just asked. This is what we did:

    1. Set up the website

    2. Sent out a group email letting our friends and family know what we were doing and inviting them to donate and to walk, too.

    3. Put a short statement and a link to our MOD website in our status on Facebook. Once when we set it up, and a second time in the week leading up to the walk.

    4. Called up our close friends and family who told us they wanted to donate, but hadn't yet in the few days leading up to the walk.

    5. Two of our husbands work for companies that were willing to match our individual donations (not the money we raised, but the money we donated). I realized that other people who donated could possibly get matching from their companies, too. Next year, we will look into that.

The ambassador family for our walk told their story at both the interest meeting as well as the walk itself. They were an inspiration to us all. Also, there were "then" and "now" pictures of preemies in our area--which was also so very inspiring.

  • This is our first time getting involved but I set up a team for the March for Babies. I have been amazed at the outpouring of support I've received from friends, family, and even a few strangers.  We have about 15 walkers planning to walk with us and we've raised $1400 already! Our walk is 1.5 weeks away. Feel free to check out our website if you're interested. www.marchforbabies.org/bcjhermans

The planning and preparations for this event, and fundraising for such a special cause, has been very healing for me after the preemie experience. I'm so glad you're interested in helping, too!

  • My sister and her friends did a MOD blood drive.  They donated their blood to benefit families in the NICU who don't have blood bank accounts.  We have a great MOD coordinator at our hospital so they worked with her to get it arranged.  It's a nice, non-financial option that meant a great deal to us since Kevin received blood transfusions a few times (although we do have a blood bank account).

  • Thank you for sharing your MOD involvement. Our walk is May 7 so I need to get busy. Thanks again!
