s/o babysitting: sitters knowing CPR

Do you require babysitters to know CPR in order to watch your LO?  It is something that DH and I are going to expect from anyone that watches DD alone for any period of time.  It might sound over the top, but in DH's profession he has seen many babysitting jobs go bad.  After reading the post below, I think the main reason I wouldn't be comfortable with a kid/teenager babysitting is that they wouldn't know what to do in an emergency.  Yes call 911, but there are many things you can do before and during that call that can save a life.

  • when we left ds with a babysitter she knew cpr and she has 5 little brothers and sisters so had a lot of experience with young kids.  but otherwise, we have a family member watch ds.  i haven't really entertained the idea of having a different babysitter (mainly because my family is always eager to watch ds) but if the need should arise later on, yes, we would want them to know cpr.

  • Honestly?  No.

I don't even know CPR so for me to expect the same thing of the person watching my kid (family or otherwise) just seems unfair.

    Same here.

  • Initially I thought I did.  But in talking to my brother who's a firefighter about something separate he told me the % of people that survive even a properly done CPR, and it was so low that I didn't see the point.

I do like to see it in professional childcare providers b/c it implies some level of training has occured.  But I don't care if grandparents or aunts and uncles know it

  • The random sitting job here or there for a couple hours or less, no. Formally hiring someone to provide more regular care, absolutely. If I were to exclude anyone who doesn't know CPR, none of our families and maybe only a couple friends could watch her.
