How did you get rid of your old computers

I know people say not to throw them out but what the hell am I supposed to do with them?  And the latest that I am talking about is an old laptop with a semi-broken screen that I never used for banking or anything important, just mostly Nesting.

Our city has a once or twice a year collection of stuff like old electronics, scrap metal and stuff like that.  They take most of it for free but charge a small amount for some stuff - like old applicances.  I would call your county or city.
