NBR: Travel recs

Where do you get recs restaurants, things to do, etc. when you're traveling?  DH and I are going to Boca Raton soon and I'm trying to find a few good restaurants to try out.  I usually go to Trip Advisor, but I'm getting annoyed with seeing "Best place EVER!!" and "HORRIBLE!! I wouldn't feed this to my dog!!" reviews for the same place.

Oh and if you've ever been to Boca feel free to pass on any recs you have.  We're going with his company, so I'm not too worried about the $$.

never been but is there a yelp page you can check out for restaurants? i like their reviews because if you have enough it evens out and you get a good idea about the place.

Usually I check out the citysearch or yelp page for that town.

I swear by yelp and just asking locals once I'm there.

I like to nerd it up and read travel books.  I've had lots of success with Fodor's travel guides.  If you don't feel like buying a book, you can always just go to Barnes and Noble, buy a nice tall coffee of your liking and read it there.

did you try the TA forums? usually you can find recs that are more recent. Also what about posting on the local nest/bump board close to boca raton for recs?

We've always had good luck asking the concierge desk at the hotel.

I love Yelp. Also, my inlaws live in Boca, so if you want specific types of recommendations, just let me know and I'll have DH ask. I don't speak to them often over the phone because of the accent/language barrier. I know, it makes me a bad DIL.

I find that chowhound usually has pretty spot-on reviews for restaurants.  We use Trip Advisor when looking for hotels but have found the reviews for other things on there pretty worthless.

we had a work meeting in boca last year - I didn't have a rental car so I had to stay at the hotel, but this restaurant was within walking distance.  it was pretty good...or maybe it was the tequila.    ha;)
