nbr: can someone teach my dh to grill?

I'm being serious here--I just want a good grilled burger, and my downtown-big city raised husband, well, just can't.  I grew in a household with 5 brothers were grilling was second nature (and I never learned how), and I miss good burgers and steak.....

Anyone know of any grilling classes he can take?  Or is anyone up for a grilling party and let their dh teach mine how to grill?

Signed--someone who misses her grilled beef.

  • Has he tried?  What does he do wrong...over cook it?

Sorry, that sucks.  My DH is AWESOME on the grill.  I love summers cause I never cook.  Or maybe we should just have you all over so you can at least get some good steaks or ribs. :)

  • DH was an awful griller.  One day while I was at Central Market I picked up their (free) grilling guide, which has very specific instructions for grilling damn near any cut of beef, pork, chicken or fish you could ever hope to eat.  After a few trial-and-error dinners he can grill with the best of 'em. I believe I found the guide near the meat counter.

But if you want guidance from a chef/instructor Central Market and Whole Foods offer cooking classes pretty much every day of the week.  Their courses change from month to month, but with summer coming on I bet one of them will offer something grill related soon.

Um, he can't light the charcoal.  It goes down hill from there.  He can never get the grill too hot, doesn't know how to adjust the temperature, doesn't know how long to cook the meat, etc...

I have to tell myself, although he can't grill he has other skills--like navigating a subway line in any other country like nobody's business.  But sign, I love grilled meat.

We don't have cable, so food network shows are out, though I suppose we could find something on netflix :)

Mike can teach him! Email me, and let's plan a get together. The kids can play, we can chat, and the guys can grill!
  • DH has the same problem. He looked a lot up online and found some tutorials through youtube.com. His burgers and sausages have gotten better and next comes steaks. I might send him to a cooking class for that since I don't want to waste a good steak.

  • Get a Traeger! My DH has always been great at grilling, but I on the other hand was very novice. Chicken was my weakness! With the Traeger, even I can grill a very tender, cut with a fork chicken breast. Oh and there is no need for charcoal, it uses wood pellets and every piece of meat is smoked and very flavorful. Just put on the wood pellets and turn on.

Or get him a gas grill!  We love ours, I can even grill pretty good on it.

Ditto the gas grill.  Doesn't taste quite as good, but heck, better than nothing.
