I really recommend watching "the Business of Being Born". It is a documentary that was made in 2007 about how birthing in America has changed in the past 100 years. It made me angry but also empowered to think about my next pregnancy/birth.
And, as a bonus, it was free on Netflix streaming. I cried watching it because I was sad I hadn't seen this before my daughter's birth. However, I don't think I would have understood how having the c-section would affect me without having gone through it myself.
Re: For those interested in VBAC...
You're right about not understanding how the c/s would affect you until afterwards. I did watch BOBB when I was pregnant with my DD, and I still ended up with all of the unwanted and unnecessary interventions that ultimately lead to my c/s. It is very frustrating to think about... BUT after my VBAC with DS a few months ago, I finally realized the significance of my c/s with DD.
If I hadn't been treated so poorly the in my first birth experience, then I would surely not have pushed myself and worked so hard for my second birth experience. I never took one second of my labor with DS for granted. I was thankful for every contraction. Every pain. Every push. Every single moment. So, even though I still think about the "shoulda-coulda-wouldas", I now feel appreciative of my c/s with DD in many ways.
GL in your next pregnancy!
