We have both landline and cells, but we only have the LL because of our security system. It's wired through the landline and to get it hardwired would be about $250 and it's just not worth it to us. Our LL is the cheapest you can get - it charges us to make out going calls (which we don't do).
We have a landline and cell phones, however, we only have the $5 a month landline plan (incoming calls and 911 only) since we have Zoomtown through CB.
We used to spend an outrageous amount with Cinci Bell. We had a landline, and office phone, a dedicated fax line (dh's business for the latter 2) + personal cell phones and business cell phones. Some of that cost was offset by dh's business.... but it was still getting ridiculous. We need a landline because of the security system.
Anyway, dh did a lot of research this past fall to try to come up with a way to not only reduce our personal portion of the bill but also his business portion of the bill. We opted to try a magicjack. We still have our landline through Cinci Bell for zoomtown and our security system, but our landline needs office wise are done through the magicjack, which is basically voice over IP. We still use a normal phone, but it's way cheaper. It's $39.95 to purchase it and use it for a year. After that, it's $19.95 for another year of service. Voice mails go to your email so you potentially can be notified faster. We've used it since January 1 and haven't had any problems with it. Your computer does have to be on if you want to dial out, but it will still accept VM if it's not on.
For dh's fax line, he uses ringcentral (https://www.ringcentral.com/) for his faxes. He gets 500 faxes/month for $8 (which for our small business is plenty). So, we reduced our phone service for his business portion to $130/year plus cell phones.
We have the cheap $10 LL for our security system, we also use magic jack and have for over a year now and had no problems. We dont leave our computer on so we just get our voicemails through the email with no problems, DH and I can listen to them from work. But we use our cell phones for everything and we share the Verizon family plan with DH's parents so we only pay half the cell phone bill, which is nice!!
Re: Click Poll: Phone Service
SS here. So yes, it's possible.
