New to CD: Question about BumGenius OS 4.0??

Just scored a good deal at cottonbabies.com on BumGenius 4.0 OS (buy 5 get 1 free). I am a first time mom to be and new to the whole CD thing. It seems that these diapers come with a newborn insert as well as a bigger insert for older babies. Do I need to buy anything else to use with these? I assume you also wash the entire diaper and the insert at each diaper change as well? Any other recommendations?

 TIA

  • You don't need anything else to be able to use them. Yes, you do wash the cover and the insert after every use. Even though they come with a newborn insert, most OS diapers do not fit newborns well.

  • For the first 2 or 3 months I used an extra small Thirsties cover with prefolds and then once he was big enough I started using the one size diapers. DS was too small for one size when he was born.

  • I currently use BGs on my DS, but the microfiber inserts do not hold enough pee so we have invested in more absorbent hemp inserts to replace the ones that come with the pockets. You can probably wait to look into doublers/inserts until after your baby arrives and you find out how heavy or light of a wetter he is.

As PP mentioned, BGs say one size but don't really fit until 10+ lbs. I bought prefolds, snappis, and covers to use on my DD until she grows into the BGs that her older brother uses.

  • Thank you-I found your blog and am amazed at the information in it. It's very helpful!!

    Congrats!

The NB insert is used alone for younger babies, the bigger insert can be used alone once they start soaking through the NB insert, and then you can use both inserts together for heavy wetters/older babies.  Those should be all you need, though for overnight or some older heavy wetters some people like supplimenting with hemp inserts. You wouldn't need to worry about that now, though.

You will wash the insert and the diaper after every use. You'll want to pull the insert out before putting it in the diaper pail.

Like PP said, most one-size diapers aren't going to fit a newborn well and don't actually start fitting well until 10-12 pounds, depending on the baby (despite the claims by manufacturers that they fit at 7 or 8 pounds - they just don't!).

If you haven't yet, check out the FAQs at the top of the board, or they're also linked in the blog in my siggy.

    Good luck!

You actually  don't have to pull the insert out in the 4.0s. My full-size inserts always agitate out in the wash! :)
