WDYT of the name Kai Richard?

It is an Asian name I believe... (me and my husband are Italian)

thanks

Re: WDYT of the name Kai Richard?

  • I don't dislike it I guess, but it's really hard for me to imagine a middle aged man or an elderly man named Kai.

Kyle sounds so similar but would be a way better choice, IMO.

  • I know a kid named Kai, he is asian.  I think I like Richard Kai better though.  Richard is DH's name too lol

  • I love the name Kai! I know a teen with that name, he's Caucasian, I think the name really suits him.

I'm not so sure about Kai Richard though. Maybe just because I'm not a fan of Richard, but they just seem like two completely different styles and don't flow very well together IMO. But, I'm trying to think of alternative mn's for fn Kai and can't at the moment!

  • DH's name is Richard, FIL's name is Richard... I refuse to name my son Richard so I thought we could use it as the middle name... that's the ONLY reason why.
  • dont like it reminds me of koi
  • Kai is nms, but it's a fine name. I think it's a bit of a silly name, so it's good to see it paired with a more serious name like Richard. That way if he becomes a heart surgeon, he can be Dr. K. Richard _____. I'm not so sure I would want "Dr. Kai" cutting into me. ;)

I feel like they don't go together.  Is Richard a family name?  I like Kai, almost used it as a middle name for my son because my heritage is Scandinavian and it is also used there, but I feel like it's gotten a big too trendy and is losing its "authenticity".  Anyway, I think those are decent names, just not together.  And do you have a really Italian last name?  How does it sound with it?

  • I'm not loving it.  Something about it doesn't work for me, not sure why.

  • I like Kai but more as a NN.  We had thought (briefly) about Hezekiah with the NN Kai.

I understand wanting to keep Richard as a MN (I don't like it as a FN either).  If you really like it with Kai then go for it.  Very rarely do people use their First and Middle names together.

See, now I would just assume the doctor was Asian, my doctor's first name growing up was Chung.

  • I don't mind Kai. It doesn't seem ethnically specific to me for some reason.

Also as PP mentioned, I like it as a NN for Malachai.

I would pair it with a traditional name as well for balance, but possibly not "Richard".

  • I associate Kai with Kai Ryssdal, the host of Marketplace on NPR, who I believe is Jewish (and is certainly not Asian).  It's by no means a common name, but I don't think it's silly or unprofessional on a grown-up.

  • Funny--this exact name was on our short list. DH, his dad, grandfather, and great-grandfather all have Richard for a FN or MN. So Richard will be this child' MN if it's a boy. Kai, as in a nn for Malachi, was one of the names I had been thinking of.

Currently though, I am more into Graeme Richard.

  • Another vote for it not matching.  There is just something that I can't put my finger on.
