April 2011 Moms

need advice: insurance (kinda long)

Sigh...so background story..DH lost his job in January.  I was on his health insurance but luckily with the new law was able to be put on my parent's coverage after he lost his insurance (I am not offered health insurance at my job)....now he is working for the union and he was told he'd be able to get insurance after 400 hours of being in the union..which puts us at the 2nd week of April (I'm due April 16...cutting it close, I know).  Come to find out DH tells me TODAY that he misunderstood them...he is eligible for insurance after the 2nd week of April but it could take 2 MONTHS to go through?!  Since I got back on my parent's insurance LO can't be covered through me. now I'm scrambling trying to find insurance to cover LO...anyone have any ideas?  I looked into Medicaid but I don't think we are eligible...is there any insurance just for baby? Or would I look into insurance for DH then add her onto his?  ANY type of insurance is better than nothing right now and she'd only need to be covered for 2 months before his insurance with the union kicks in.

I am so lost as to how to go about this, and looking it up is so overwhelming!  I guess Monday will be a day of phone calls to different insurance companies

  • you should be able to get a policy just for your little one.  In Massachusetts I know there is a website that links you to lots of dift insurance co.s if you happen to be in MA its the masshealthconnector

    good luck!

  • Check with your state or local health department. In Florida there is insurance called Florida KidCare that provides reasonable insurance just for children.
  • After your LO is born, you should be able to apply for an individual policy for your baby. It could be tough if he/she has a pre-existing condition at birth, but generally, yes, they will insure your baby. His/her hospital stay should be covered under your insurance and then his first well visit would need to be covered on his/her own policy.

I will warn you, you will not be able to get health insurance for your DH right now (in most states, maybe you're lucky and live in one of the few states that will insure an expectant father). We needed to get a one-month policy for my husband because he switched jobs and no one would insure him because he was an expectant father. So if your DH needs insurance, you will likely need to wait until after your LO is born.

    Good luck!

This is a good idea.  I think a lot of states have this kind of thing now.  If that doesn't work, I'd look for an insurance broker.  They can look into different companies and know a lot more about insurances than the average person doing research would be able to learn.

  • Hi!

We're in kind of the same position - when I got pregnant, I switched to my parents plan (new Obama healthcare thing where you can be under until 26) because they had muchhhhhhh better health insurance/maternity and I went part-time at my job so no longer qualified.  This now means, like you, LO cannot be under me. We could add him to my hubby's - but their insurance together under his company is insanely expensive.

We looked into a individual plan just for baby - but that depends on the state you are in. We live in Texas and currently in TX there are no programs offering individual insurance for a child. This varies by State.

So our only choice is to go hubby's expensive job route or to get hubby and LO onto a private insurance plan once LO is born (in those first 30 days). We've looked at Humana and BCBS doesn't have horrible rates for this type of thing.

Let me know if you find out any further info! Good luck!
