I need some tips for how to do onesie decorating at a baby shower. I don't want to necessarily use fabric puffy paint because I think they'll be too stiff and DS won't be able to actually wear them. I also saw in my google research that some people use fabric markers, and whenever I've used them in the past, they have a really faded, thin look.
Anyone had success with this activity? I've never done it or been a part of it, so I'm kind of at a loss. Any advice will help!
Re: Onesie Decorating
I have not done this - yet - but the hosts for my shower are considering it so I have done a little bit of research into how to do it. I would NOT use puffy paint. It takes way too long to dry. Unless your shower is at your house, you will have a hard time getting them home.
When using the fabric markers you will want to put something inside the onesie - like a piece of cardboard - to make sure the markers do not bleed through to the back. I think one of my hosts was going to get a few different types of markers just to try them out before the actual shower. This would help with the faded, thin look you are worried about. Make sure you read directions on the markers - I guess one set that was bought said to iron the fabric after the design was drawn on but before washing to help "set" the marker on the fabric.
You will probably also want to get a few different sizes of onesies to have decorated. You don't want to end up with 30 newborn onesies. If you have a variety of sizes your LO will be able to wear handmade creations for much longer.
Depending on how creative your guests are, you may also want to have a list of suggestions that they can use when designing the onesie.
Good luck!
I've done the onesie painting twice at showers I've attended. One place we used the puffy paint and although the pictures/designs looked really nice they didn't stay that way. The shower was in the garage (it was a warm day with a lot of people) and the wind picked up. They had all the onesies laying out across a huge homemade "table" and they got all kind of thrown together with the wind and it was a mess. I think the majority of them were ruined. The regular fabric marker ones turned out much better and didn't take that long to dry. Like the other pp said...make sure you put some cardboard between the front and back of the shirt.
I have hosted a couple of showers we did something similiar but used bibs. Cheaper by far...and we used the fabric markers.
