Pronunciation of Girl Name

Hi girls :) I'm a lurker on this board (I LOVE reading about and seeing baby names!) My DH and I have been TTC #1 since January. No success yet, but I'm hoping very soon!

Anyway...we always talk about what we will name our future children and names that we like/dislike. (We rarely ever agree.) Well one day I came up with the name Lucia. I love it...and DH loves it as well! I come from a very strong Italian family, and I know that they would say it is properly pronounced "Lou-Chee-Ah" but I was wondering if anyone has ever heard it pronounced with the soft /s/ sound as in "Lou-see-ah" What are your preferences?

Lucia Isabella is the FN/MN combination we really like :)

Re: Pronunciation of Girl Name

  • I've only known Lu chee ahs.  (I grew up in a very Italian community.)

I've heard Lu see ah on television.

  • I went to school with a girl named Lucia...pronounced Loo-see-ya. I also know of a little girl, about 5, pronounced the same way. I also, have heard it pronounced Loo-sha (like St. Lucia). Personally, I like Loo-see-ya best. Pretty name!
  • I would probably say Loo-see-uh if I saw it.

  • I pronounce it Loo-see-uh unless I know they're Italian, then Loo-chee-uh. I believe the Hispanic way of pronouncing it is with the soft s sound, so maybe that's why I lean toward it. The Hispanic population is huge over here. I love the combo you have there. :) Very pretty.

  • I was thinking it would be Lou- Sha (only two syllables).  That's the way I've heard it... like the island St. Lucia

  • The problem with this name is that there is FOUR "proper" pronunciations, depending on which origin of the name you are choosing. My friend pronounces it Lu-SHA so that is how I tend to look at it and say it until corrected. This is and always will be a name where you will have to tell people how YOU want it pronounced.

    LUCIA

    Gender: Feminine

Usage: Italian, German, English, Scandinavian, Romanian, Slovak, Ancient Roman

Pronounced: loo-CHEE-ah (Italian), LOO-tsee-ah (German), LOO-sh? (English), loo-SEE-? (English)  [key]

Feminine form of LUCIUS. Saint Lucia was a 4th-century martyr from Syracuse. She was said to have had her eyes gouged out, and thus is the patron saint of the blind. She was widely revered in the Middle Ages, and her name has been used throughout Christian Europe (in various spellings). It has been used in the England since the 12th-century, usually in the spellings Lucy or Luce.

  • I would only pronounce ot Lu-chee-a. I am italian so to me this is the way.
  • I'm Italian so it's 'lou chee ah', but I do like the pn 'Lou see ah' better.

  • I am Italian, and I would mispronounce it as Loo-sha because I don't know anyone with that name.
  • If I came across this name, I'd ask the owner of it how to pronounce it.  Then I'd pronounce it the way she tells me to.  No big deal and any of those pronunciations are really pretty, in my opinion.

  • I have never heard of the name pronounced "Lou-Chee-Ah" but I really like that one now that I have heard it. I prefer sticking with proper pronounciations.

  • This name has 3 correct pronunciations. I like them in the following order:
Loo-see-ah (this is actually the way my niece says it. Plus, as a speaker of Spanish, this is my first instinct.)
Loo-chee-ah (as you know, this is the Italian pronunciation, also pretty)
Loo-sha (like the island...I actually dislike the name when pronounced this way)

All three are correct. It's merely what you prefer.

I'm Swedish and St. Lucia Day is pronounced Lou-see-uh so I like it that way. I also would pronounce it like the island St. Lucia. I'm not familiar with the "chee" pronunciation.
  • This totally doesn't help, I'm sure, but the only Lucia I've known pronounced it like Lucy.  It always confused me.
