Question about timing of progesterone

Okay ladies, I asked this over on the IF board as well, does it sound strange that my FET instructions were to trigger last night (which I did) and then start crinone (progesterone) upon waking Sunday morning?  I know on average a woman will ovulate 36 hours after trigger but what if I haven't ovulated yet and I start the crinone too early?  Do you think she meant to say Monday morning?  I always thought you needed to be sure you have ovulated before starting any kind of progesterone or it could actually interfere with the ovulation itself?  Am I wrong about that?  Has anyone else started their progesterone supplements so soon after trigger?

Re: Question about timing of progesterone

  • Thanks so much for responding, that does make sense.  I have a call in to my RE's office but since it's the weekend I'm not too confident I will be getting a call back today.  My transfer is scheduled for Tuesday so if I wait until Monday to start the progesterone I may not have enough in my system.  Guess I just need to start it tomorrow like they said and try not to worry!

I could be wrong...but here's my take on it.

Progesterone can prevent ovulation (like it does in birth control) by preventing the LH surge.  This happens because there is a negative feedback between progesterone and something in your brain to stop GnRH production (FSH and LH). So if you take progesterone too early, you can stop ovulation by stopping the LH production.

BUT, you did a trigger shot, which means you don't need the LH from your brain, you'll ovulate because of the HCG trigger. Progesterone doesn't directly block LH, it just blocks the production so it won't inhibit the HCG from doing it's job.  From talking to my RE, you want the progesterone on board before the transfer, so I would listen to the doc and start the progesterone as advised.

If you still aren't sure, I would call the nurse.  It will give you piece of mind.

    Good luck with your FET!
