Would You Tell an Acquaintance that She Picked a Stigmatized Name?

I work with a woman and her husband who are expats from another country. They are fairly assimilated but need to bs filled in on some cultural things now and then- usually pop culture. Well, they chose a name for their baby that is the exact name (FN & LN) of an infamous celebrity. For privacy's sake, let's just say this train wreck has been on Celebrity Rehab!! The problem is the baby is already born & named! Should someone at least warn the parents so they know why they get blank stares when they share LO's name or just let it be?

This. I wouldn't have the balls to tell them...maybe if they were American and knew better, yes.

 

Now I'm curious....I can't think of a name!

I agree.  If it was an unborn I'd likely warn them, but if its an existing kid they'll find out soon enough...

Ok. Sounds good to me, thanks. I just wasn't sure if This was like telling someone their zipper is down (good friend's have the nerve to tell you) or more like telling someone they've gained weight (good friends have the tact NOT to tell you). KWIM?

I would maybe casually ask them "Did you know about xyz celebrity, he was in this movie/show, etc" so that opens it up for them to say "I have no idea who that is" or, "Yeah we loved his song about dancing in the 70's"

I would hate for them to find out from someone else.

I'd probably just let it be. If the baby wasn't born yet, I'd let them know in a subtle way like, "Oh, there's a celebrity with that name. Maybe you should google them." But, since the baby is here and named, there is nothing you can do, but refrain from being the jerk that bursts their bubble and tells them they named their kid after a junkie.

i was thinking this exact same thing. most "celebs" on celebrity rehab are washed up people the majority of us have forgotten about (or never heard of to begin with). I wouldn't worry about it...especially since the child is already born.
