curious...we have been trying 10 months and all is good with me. My DH has slight low count and morph of 5% but RE wants us to start IUI already. We were not expecting it to be so soon and want to continue trying on our own and go see urologist. Thoughts?

Re: how many months trying before turning to IUI?
11/2010 DH SA good...01/2011 HSG is clear...01/2011 Consult with RE
suprise BFP but m/c on 2/7/11
03/2011 50 mg clomid=BFN
04/2011 clomid+bromocriptine+IUI=BFP at 11dpiui
Beta #1(11dpiui)=33, Beta #2 (13dpiui)=96, Beta #3 (20dpiui)=1910, Beta #4 (26dpiui)=20,134
After a year TTC and with on m/c we saw an RE and went straight to injectable IUIs and IVF after 2 failed IUI cycles, based on our dx and our outlook.
Your RE should work with your dx and comfort level with moving forward.

General guidelines most re's use, is that if you are under 35, and have been trying atleast a year, with no success, to see an RE
If you are over 35 and have been trying atleast 6 months, then you need to see and RE.
but- I think if you have already known issues- you can go see them earlier.
And trying means, TI, and OPK's and BBT's...
Right now if you are just MFI, I am surprised the RE hasn't already referred you to a uro- for another SA
But- I have never known of RE, that said- you haven't been trying long enough, go home try some more and call me... They want your money...
We went to an RE after 9 months of trying...
I went because my sister had issues with IF...she told me to run to one- because she had tried 28 months for my 1st neice...
She was trying to save me from going through what she went through...turns out- my DH had a whole 'nother issue...
but- if you have expressed to your RE- he may feel like you want to be aggressive with it- and maybe that is why he suggested it- but
have you been tested?
Had an HSG, bloodwork, etc?

I completely agree with this statement. We tried on our own for two years before we were ready to see an RE. No matter what the guidelines are, if you're not comfortable going forward yet, then don't.
After 4 years, 3 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs our surprise miracle is here!

The doctors' advice on when to go generally depends on age; someone else posted that if you're over 35 they recommend you only try for 6 months before going in for testing. I've also read that if you're over 40 (or close) they recommend only trying 3 months. The statistical probability of your eggs being ok drops like a hot rock the closer you get to 40 (and let's not even talk about after).
It will take a couple of months or so to get through all the testing, so you'll probably want to build that into your thinking.
And as someone else mentioned, the doctors assume you're ready to go full speed ahead when you walk in the door. If you're not ready for that, have the time to wait, or want to read up a bit, just know that. My husband and I feel like we tentatively climbed on the treadmill of testing and they slammed the speed up to 10 immediately. Some of that is because I'm in the age trap; I'm 40, so there really isn't an opportunity to wait.
Best wishes -
History of IF and 2.5 years TTC. The day we were to start our first IUI we received a call that changed our lives forever and 10 month old Olivia joined our family. Shortly thereafter we got a surprise BFP and baby 2 is due July 5, 2012
