What to do with baby clothes?

DD has been growing like a weed (some of her 18mo outfits are getting snug)!  DH & I don't know yet about another LO... so I've just been piling the clean, too-small clothes.  The pile is getting out of control.  I'm wondering what others have done as LO outgrows clothes, do you sell it? box it up? or...?

TIA!

Re: What to do with baby clothes?

  • We are planning on having another, so I have everything organized in storage containers by size.  Eventually we will give them to friends/consign/donate them, but I'd rather keep them until baby #2.

  • Personally, I'm keeping most of it in case #2 is a girl.  Though I'm already running out of space under beds and in closets for the bins of out-grown clothing, so I may have to go through at some point and edit myself.  I'll probably just do that in time to sell a few things at the next Bumps & Babies Fair.
  • You could loan them out to a friend who may need them. If that's not something you want to do and you don't have the room to store them I'd sell them. I had great success at the Bumps and Babies fair and I'm already thinking about the next one.

  • I saved all ours. You can get those vaccum bags at target and compress the clothes down flat enough to fit under a bed

  • not sure if we will have #2 so I am selling or donating all of M's old clothes.

  • I kept the clothes, shoes and hats/accessories I absolutely loved and couldn't bear to part with and the ready I passed on to friends, consigned and everything else was donated. Emma had more clothes than we knew what to do with. We were blessed with a 50+ pound box of name brands hand-me-downs that gave us so many clothes we didnt have room for it all. As she's gotten older, I've saved less because they seem to get more stains, tears and just look well-worn.

  • We have gotten so many clothes as gifts (and with me sale shopping and hitting consignment sales..) that I just keep my favorites (for #2 if it's a boy) as he grows and donate/sell the rest.  I just consigned at the JBF sale for this weekend and I'm hoping for success .. I'm probably going to do the BBF in August too if I have more left to sell :)
  • I've keep a few things incase we have another boy but being that I know as the youngest in the family I use to get alot of hand me downs and hated it I will happily buy our next baby new things. So I am either selling alot of stuff on Ebay or giving to family/friends to use.

EVERYTHING is boxed up and put away. That includes bottles and toys that he has outgrown. We are going to start TTC for number two this fall (hopefully), so we won't get rid of anything until we know that we aren't having another boy!

  • I have everything boxed up by size in Cooper's closet.   I gave all of my clothes to a friend who had a boy after Ben, and she gave them all back and now Cooper's wearing it all.   So it's on a third kid.  And it's all still in great shape.

  • I gave some of his baby clothes to a friend who had a baby boy this past October.  I have also donated some of his baby clothes to Goodwill.  And I have sold some of his clothes at the Bumps & Babies Fair that was at the end of February.

  • I keep the best and give the rest to friends. Bags and bags have gone on to live once again. :)

  • I have spent WAY too much time and money on buying Collin's clothes -- I love finding a deal! -- so I am keeping everything until we have our next child. If it's a boy, he will have a complete wardrobe. If it's a girl, I will consign everything that can't be used as unisex. I figure that if I liked it once, I'll like it again!

  • I kept absolutely everything after baby # 1 since we wanted another close in age. I kept everything in Rubbermaid totes and put them in the attic or under the house where we keep the Xmas stuff. Toys, carseat/bases etc ALL went into giant plastic bags if to large for bins. Once we knew #2 was a boy, I went thru and sorted my favorite keepsakes into a bin and all the rest were consigned or donated. I'd done bins full to local consignment stores, but by far the best deal is to do a consignment sale where YOU price everything. The good thing with consignment is the older age clothes command a h other price and tend to sell better since there is a smaller amount at the sale. I have done VERY well at the 2 I have participated in in the past month. ;)

  • Stored in bins and ready to pass on to SIL. I loaned out my exersaucer and carseat to friends in need, so when it's time to get them back, I can pass those along to family as well (and not store them in the meantime!). For clothes, we received mostly hand-me-downs (really high-quality stuff thanks to my clotheshorse friend). And as her boys get older, we occasionally weed through their outgrown clothes and for anything name-brand that she could resell she tells me the price and I either buy or pass. The rest is free to me, and much appreciated.

Resale on good named clothing items (miniboden, hanna andersen, janie & jack etc) is crazy good, so I encourage her to try to sell them. She mostly does eBay and does quite well. Consignment is the next best price for sure. And donation is always great - Westside and Eastside Baby are always in need. And I just learned that Big Brothers Big Sisters gets 1/3 of their $ (!) from donations to Value Village in those purple drop-off bins.

Also, just saw this new online consignment site just launched: StellaplusJack - could be cool!
