wow, seeing this reinforces how incredibly grateful I am to live where we do - right outside of Boston.  We have access to some of the best care in the country (if not hte world)....

Was thinking the exact same thing! Boston is about 1.5 hours away from me, but if we had to go to a Children's hospital, I like knowing we are close!

This is informative, but I think SO much depends on the specific doctor. We had a terrible neurologist through CHB (as in dismissive and condescending), but overall, our experience has been pretty positive. Our geneticist was also nothing to write home about (sent me a 15 year old publication about my daughter's diagnosis as a means to 'explain' it)...

We're 1/2 hour from Boston too.  I love Children's Hospital and was happy to see them rated #1 for neurology.  We started out at Mass General.  We're thrilled with our neurologist.

I live in New Mexico . . .so none of the great ones are near me.  But I do love our neuro, so I am happy about that.

In neurotic news: this list of hospitals made me really sad.  I hate that babies are sick.

Carson Henry, born 39w, 2d, via emergency c/s due to no fetal movement and fetal distress.  Seizures, IVH grade 2, brain injury, kidney and liver damage.  Complete blood clot in the artery in his right arm.  27 days in the NICU.  Now discharged from all specialists, excepts his kidney doctor, who will monitor him indefinitely.  My tough little cookie.

I thought Houston made #4 on the list in Neuro?  Not close enough?  Just in case...  But, I'm VERY glad you're happy with your current physician.

And, as to your neurotic news, the list made me think of the country song with the first line, "How in the world can we put a man on the moon, and still have a need for a place like St. Jude's?"

I have to drive 8 hours every six weeks to get to our childrens hospital.  I think they are great, but they aren't on the list.  I do think a lot depends on the specific doctors that you get.  It is good to know which ones are the best though, just in case.

I agree that it depends on the doctor, and the diagnosis. Each hospital has its niche.

It is nice to have this as a resource, though. :)

Houston is a little far for us.  I guess we could drive there if Carson needed something specialized.  I do absolutely love our neuro.  She is so wonderful I can't even describe it.  We are very lucky to have her.  Now, I kind of hate our hematologist.  But there is only one peds practice in town, so we are kinda stuck for now.  Hopefully the next round of tests will rule everything out and I won't have to see them again!

can't say enough wonderful things about CHOP's cardiac care unit! they were phenomenal!  after S's cardiac ablation on tuesday, my husband, who is never at a loss for words, just shook our doctor's hand and told him, "You are my HERO!" I couldn't agree more! plus every member of the staff that we came in contact with was amazing, friendly and helpful! from the parking lot attendant, to the porters, the nursing staff, the waiting room staff.

I am so glad CHOP was our choice!

autumngirl - we see a geneticist through the Feingold Center in Waltham who we love...if you haven't found a new one, you might consider it...

This. Exactly this. Not exactly a fan of these top 10 lists for a lot of reasons. One is that I think hospitals and universities make decisions based on catching the attention of the media and building the brand rather than in the interest of doing the most good.

Plus a good hospital isn't as important and a good team. CHOP is a consistently good hospital in these polls but they certainly aren't tops in ASD related care in Philadelphia. Most people I know prefer Ross who is affiliated with Einstein and Coplan who has a private practice. If I were to travel it would be to Yale.

It makes me crazy that developmental pediatrics and psychiatry aren't sexy enough to be considered worthy of listing. This, while one child in 110 is getting an ASD dx?

I understand that it's a prevalent issue in the United States, but this board isn't STRICTLY for ASD families.  I'm sorry that you feel that ASD receives such little coverage or isn't sexy enough for coverage on this list.  I disagree.

Take what you can from the list and move on.  If you never have a need for any of the Specialties on the list, consider yourself lucky.  As for the rest of us who can benefit from reading rankings and reviews like these, I'm glad that it's available.

I really think this list is more for inpatient care in the hospital and not clinical care. If you look at what they are rating, it applies to inpatient care. So, for those who are parents of ASD who are not usually inpatient, this list really doesn't pertain to you.

Our hospital was rated #2 overall by Parents magazine when our son was born. When I look at them now, I see they are rated much lower mainly due to low nurse to patient ratio (although this is a different study). We lived through this for 99 days. There were days/nights where our son in the CICU shared a nurse with 2 other kiddos. Or times when I felt like the nurse all day long. This should be alarming to the hospital. I absolutely love the hospital and the doctors and it is so wonderful to be so close to such a great hospital, but I know they are having trouble getting nurses at the ICU level since they are always so full.

Thanks for posting this article. For me it was informative in two ways.

    1. The survey results are doctor's opinions of where they would send or refer their sickest patients. I question if those same doctors have actually referred patients and followed up on the care their patient recieved at those locations OR is it more based on a reputation of those facilities deserved or not.

    2. There is no patient or family feedback regarding those particular disciplines which is probably something they couldn't do. I had to laugh out loud when Johns Hopkins ranked #1 for ENT. We waited 2 hours past our 12 noon appointment and did not leave the facility until 3:00. I was LIVID. I overheard other families talking in the waiting room regarding calling ahead and finding out where the dr was in his schedule and laughing about them being behind. Clearly this happens ALOT.

Maybe it is a good thing that they cannot manage their time. I would hope that means that someone really sick is getting extra care. If not, it is just a total, rude disregard for the patient and their family. DH had to go back to work after we waited 1 hour. I was not going to waste more time with making another appoinment.
