Matt is obsessed with cats. Our neighbor has two outdoor cats and Matt can see them from the kitchen window. He is constantly asking to be picked up to look out the window. 90% they are not back there so it is sort of a PITA.
Our friends got two kittens (kittahs) and we have taken Matt a couple of times to see them but he isn't that interested in them up close.
So this weekend I got Matt a stuffed cat and he LOVES it. He really hasn't been attached to anything (binky, blankets etc) but this just might be the one thing that is a constant.
He asked for it last night before going to bed. Now when he asks to be picked up to look out the window I just ask him where his kitten is and he runs to get it!

And yeah, our cat accidentally scratched Mikey's arm when he had her trapped and she was trying to escape and he didn't even blink. Well, he blinked, but he didn't cry.

I think cats are less intimidating than dogs. Dogs kind of get in your face (when you're that low to the ground) and can be a little bit scary if they're high energy.
Charles LOVES our old kitty cat, and she sorta likes him, but will disappear fast when he gets too rough. He likes to chase her around and sit on her, which isn't good since she's pretty arthritic and in not-so-great health.
He also has a stuffed tiger that he LOVES LOVES LOVES. Drags him around by his tail all the time.
