Back when I was in my 20s, I was outside on a break from work and a pregnant woman was smoking. She said "I don't care what they say about smoking, I WANT a low birthweight baby. The smaller the better, it hurts when they come out."
I told her I thought she was sick in the head while the other women gasped.

Go figure she and I never got along.....
omg Horrible! I dont understand it either (I will be 30 tomm and my Mom smoked with me) but I dont think really knew any better or atleast it wasnt like how we have all the info now on how severe it is!
I dont get it and never will why people do this. Ive heard people say well my Doc told me not to do anything "drastic"

I am 37 and my mom smoked with me because they really didn't know if it was bad - her doctor told her that she probably shouldn't though. Anyway - I weighed 9lbs 6oz - so much for low birth weight for me!
In my bag: Nikon D90; 35mm 1.8, 90mm 2.8 macro (my fave), Lensbaby Composer with macro extensions. BFP after 13 cycles and one ectopic. Lost left tube 5/19/10.
This grosses me out. I attended a wedding where the bride was six months pregnant (meaning it was public knowledge) and smoked throughout the entire reception at the head table. All of her bridesmaids were right along side her smoking, too. I was disgusted and refused to attend her baby shower.
I almost hate to say it, because I don't think it should be done at all, but if you're going to smoke or drink while pregnant, at least have the brains not to flaunt it.
of course when they didn't know any better, that can sorta be excused, but nowadays, NO ONE has an excuse. i just don't get it, and PLEASE, those moms that do smoke while pg, trying to give ME parenting/pgcy advice? I DON'T THINK SO!
My MIL smoked through all 3 of her pregnancies, and she's proud of it! She makes comments like "If I hadn't smoked, just think how big they might have been!" or "I smoked the whole time I was pregnant and they didn't have any problems."
Then again, she also refuses to believe that the tumor that was removed from her son's face when he was a child might have been related to her smoking while pregnant with him (even though the doctor's said so....)
I once saw a young mom-to-be walking down the street smoking and drinking a red bull!!! That really got me angry!
I'm the type to go up to her and take the red bull and cigarette from her hand and extinguish the cigarette IN the red bull can. Point made. It won't stop them but it makes me feel better and calms the hormones for a little while.
MissAmber: You boy is way toooo cute!!!! I just had to post it.

My neighbor smoked through her whole pregnancy and actually said to me that her doctor told it was okay because she wasn't drinking or using drugs. I guess she felt that as long as you don't mix your vices it's fine? It was the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard.

Boy am I glad I quit for good (after quitting last fall and falling back into a pattern of "social smoking") on New Years Eve. I would never have the heart to light a cigarette knowing I was pregnant. Being pregnant is hard enough without having to throw in nicotine withdrawal on top of it!
I know it's cruel, but when I see a pregnant woman smoking (which has happened all of twice), I think something along the lines of, "well, the world needs gas station attendants, too."

Aww thanks!
FTR, everyone I know's doctors has told them to cut back, but not quit cold turkey. That can apparently put the baby into shock or something.
My dr told me the same thing, and then I informed her that I don't smoke anyway.
Just sayin'.
