Cloth Diapering

We've got the funk

The microfiber funk that is.

DD wears BG's for her nighttime diaper. And lately they smell HORRIBLE in the morning when she wakes up. Like my 2.5 year old said this morning "Pee-yew! It smells STINKY in here!" It seriously smells like a barn in her room. It's a bit ammonia-y but also just a stanky musky smell.

We use homemade EFF CD detergent, HE machine. Cold quick wash (with no soap) followed by a hot cycle with two cold rinses. SOmetimes add a splash of vinegar in the rinse too.

I am thinking we need to go back to Tide (boo). Any other suggestions? We've stripped with Dawn a few times, but it seems like we are doing that every other week.

Re: We've got the funk

  • I tried the EFF detergent, and it just didn't work for us.  I switched to Rockin Green.  I do a gentle wash, warm with warm rinse with 1 TBSP RNG Funk Rock, then hot wash, cold double rinse with 2 TBSP RNG.  And then I put my PUL in the dryer on low, and do an extra rinse and spin on cold for the inserts and fitteds with eCover.

  • I was using Crunchy Clean and had that happen a lot.  I just switched to RnG and I love it.  I have done an overnight soak twice and it completely got rid of the funk.  Now I just do it like once a month to keep it away or when they start stinking again.

The barnyard funk usually means you need more detergent and some ammonia smell in an overnight diaper is pretty normal, but if it's mostly barnyard you are smelling I would try upping the detergent a bit

  • I use crunchy clean and I added a squirt of dawn for two consecutive loads and an extra extra rinse and that got rid of it for us :)

EDIT: I also turned up our water heater

  • Thanks for the suggestions ladies! I will first try stripping them again and then using more detergent. If that doesn't cure it we'll look into switching detergents.

    thanks again!
