Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

changing to rear-facing

hi, I haven't been on here in awhile, and I'm sure this has been asked since the whole car seat thing changed last week.  How many of you have switched your childs seat around?  How have they handled it?  How many of you aren't switching??  My girls will be two soon, and have been front facing for awhile, and I have no idea what to do.  Thanks :)

Re: changing to rear-facing

  • I just had my DD 15month appt this past week and her pedi rec staying rear until 2 and told me to check her infant seat for the max height/weight....come to find out she already out grew this and we already purchased the next seat before this announcement and it doesn't allow the rear facing.  So we'll have to have her forward facing now...even though it makes me nervous!  We bought a highly rec and consumer rated seat.

It is recommended to keep them rear facing until 2, not required.  If they've been forward facing, they're fine.

  • DD is forward facing and we have no plans to switch her back around unless the laws change.  With the next one we will keep them rear facing longer but I can't imagine turning DD back around now.

  • ok, I'm so glad to hear that I'm not the only one that isn't planning on switching.  My brother is dating a pediatrician, and they are making me feel like a bad mom by not switching.
  • DD will be 2 at the end of April.  I have no plans switching her back to RF.  When we have #2 we will keep him or her RF longer than DD

  • We have 2 car seats 1 for each car ,and one of them we got for our baby shower and it is forward facing only. We put that one in DH's truck when LO turned one and the one one in my car LO has been in since 6 months old and i never turned it around because he's never complained or cried being that way. So the majority of the time he is rear faced in my car and when he's with DH he is forward facing. I'll keep him rear facing in my car for as long as he's ok with it, or until the new addition in Nov. But if i had switched him already in my car i wouldn't be switching him back.

  •  My son is 18 mo and still RFing and I'll keep him that way as long as possible, at least til he's 2.

Oops, I misunderstood.  I didn't realize you were referring to the new recommendations.  Now it makes sense to me.

  • since DD is less than a month away from her 2nd birthday I will not be switching. But if she'd been younger I would have tried to put her RF again (i know easier said than done).  But it's not like the AAP's new recommendation is a surprise or anything.  If there's one thing TB taught me is that RF is always safer.

  • I did this with my son a couple years ago. I turned him FF at 15 months and then a month later, I decided to turn him back to RFing. He never had a problem with RFing so he didn't care when I turned him back. We turned him FF at 3 years.

  • We just turned Keira forward after her 15 month check up.  She is a little peanut, so she had not outgrown her infant carset until that time.  I went to the fire station to ask because of all the FF vs RF controversy and the Fireman told me that it is just a recommendation and if he were me he would switch her to FF.  He said 15 months is longer than most people do RF and not to worry about it.
  • I would turn them back around but thats my opinion. My 22 month old is still rear facing. I would hate to get in an accident and regret not having him rear facing.

There are recommendations for a reason. To ke

Uh, they're fine cause they havent been in an accident yet.

  • We are keeping him forward facing. Driving with him rear facing was horrible and I couldn't imagine turning him around again.
  • if you're concerned...since you're posting, why not just try it? If they don't take to it, it's not permanent, just switch it back. I have been juggling seats and cars -having repairs, loaner etc...I'm now a pro at installing seats. it's worth a shot
