Toddlers: 24 Months+

If your toddler wears glasses, please come in!

Went to the ophthalmologist because we were concerned about my dd's left eye that was turned inward and found out that she is farsighted and needs glasses.

The doctor recommended these https://miraflex.info/index.htm, but I have to admit, I'm not a fan.  I don't mind the rectangle ones as much though.

My question is, can anyone give me any good recommendations besides the Miraflex glasses???  Or even if you have a review of the Miraflex frames, that would be helpful too!

Thanks!

  • DD has been in glasses for about 8 months now.  we never used the miraflex because my mother said we couldn't put her grandbaby in those Mr. Magoo glasses.  It is really hard to find other frames for small faces.  The best ones I have found are a dora and diego design at wal-mart.  I get the frames there and then get my optomotrist to cut the glasses (I don't trust wal-mart)  If I were you I would make sure that they have the full cushie nose piece and ear wire.  Good luck.
  • DD#2 started wearing glasses a week after her 2nd birthday and I got her two pairs, one being the ones you are referring to and those were only to be worn while she played hard at daycare or at the park because they were soo flexible and didn't scratch much. She had a bad habit of not wanting to wear them and she would hide them under the sand at daycare. I admit, I felt bad everytime I saw her wearing those because of how they look but I knew she wouldn't care, I was the one that cared and at her age, none of the other kids were bullying so she had no idea how they looked. I had another pair with rounded frames around the eyes but were a bronze metal on the frame. These were nice and they were to be worn when we out or when she wasn't playing outside. There really aren't that many frames at their age to choose from for their size. Once DD#2 turned 3 1/2 she was able to get the Disney princess frames and she really enjoyed them.

  • My son wears Miraflex.  At first I thought they were really ugly but they have grown on me.  He's had them for a year and they are indestructable.  If he had real glasses we'd already have had to replace them twice and we can't afford to do that right now, we need something that is durable.  We won't get real glasses until next year when he's a little more careful.  The response from people has been great, everyone comments on how cute they are.  I have to say I think they are cute now because my kid is cute and he "owns" the glasses thing.

My advice, get the miraflex for the first pair because a child getting used to glasses won't be easy on a real pair.  Then get a nicer pair later.

  • We got DD these glasses.  They are great!  She even wears them at her tumbling class.  We have had to get them adjusted 2-3 times a month, but no they haven't broke at all.  They hold up with her taking them on and off.  Really, I am very please with them.

  • thanks so much ladies!  after reading up on miraflex last night, i found out that you have to have the strap in the back, which i know won't go over with my child.  so i did a little more research and found these, which have the wire temple.  i think they are cute.  https://www.framesdirect.com/1/1/73474-modz-beginner-pastel-blue-eyeglasses.html

carebear...your daughter and those glasses are adorable!  do they stay on her ok, since they don't have the wire temple (that wraps behind the ears)?

Thanks!  They stay on her face great.  Sometimes, if she is REALLY moving around...tumbling, dancing, etc., they may go a little crooked.  If she feels they are crooked, she just moves them back to the right place.  The don't just fall off or even fall down her nose.  If the glasses do slipping off her face, then I know that it is time for her to go back and get them adjusted.

  • My DS has worn glasses since 7 months old and he is now 2.5. We really liked the fisher price glasses with the metal frames and cables around the ears. https://www.framesdirect.com/framesfc/Fisher_Price-lfki-pr-l.html

They did bend, but they actually held up quite well. Plus places like Lenscrafters will adjust them if they bend. I was not a fan of the Miraflex look either...tho I have heard they are pretty indestructible!

Once ds got older and used to them we moved into glasses without cables. He is wearing sketchers now like this https://www.framesdirect.com/framesfp/Skechers-nardqh/r.html

Do you have an eyeglass store in your area that caters to children? Ours is attached to the pediatric ophthalmologist. We found the technicians there to be the best for measuring and recommending the best glasses since they work with the little guys all day. Plus they had a great policy on broken frames (2 year warranty!) that will probably come in handy at some point.

This may be late, but I am an optometrist and the mom of a little girl who has been wearing glasses since two weeks after her second birthday.  Find an optical shop or larger private practice that carries lots of pediatric frames or at least someone who is willing to look through catalogues with you and order some frames for your daughter to try on.  My DD is in a Disney frame.  They do not have cable temples (which wrap around the ears) and she does wonderfully.  Find someone who is knowledgeable about peds glasses and find something she will wear.  The happier she is with the frame, the more she will wear them.
  • thank you so much ladies...these were all helpful! :)

i wish we had a children's eyewear place here, but i haven't found anything and most of the places i've called say they just have a small section. :(  i think we are going to check a couple of them out tomorrow.  but i noticed chicago has a couple children's optical places and i've thought about taking a road trip in case we don't find anything here.
