What would you do re: out of town funeral?

My husband's grandmother's husband (so I guess technically, DH's stepgrandfather?) passed away last night. He had a stroke last week and has been in a coma ever since. They are looking at a service a couple of days after my due date, 2 hours from where we live. We have been discussing and are trying to decide what makes the most sense for us to do. What would you ladies do in this situation? Note: DH was not close to this man at all - he would be going to support his grandmother. If it weren't going to be past my due date I wouldn't be concerned about the 2 hour drive, but given that I'm not sure what to do. Obviously this all goes out the window if I go into labor soon.

  • i voted for neither of you attends.  like you said, he's not close to this person, it's not his actual grandfather or even someone who acted as a grandfather.  i'm sure his grandmother will understand, and he can reach out to her to offer his support via phone.

  • I think my answer would depend on how close he is with his grandmother.  If either of my grandmother's lost a husband, I would be attending come hell or high water to support her.  We're close!  But if they are not that close, I would skip the funeral and promise to bring the baby to visit her as soon as you're comfortable doing so.  That would probably cheer her up more than having you at the funeral.
