Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Could this be Lactose Intolerance?

Questions:

Does anyone have a toddler who is lactose intolerant?

Has anyone tried lactose free milk for their toddler?

Has anyone tried goats milk for their toddler?

Background:

DS is almost 13 months and we have been incorporating whole milk into his diet since just before his birthday.  I EBF/EP before that.

Around the same time he went on antibiotics for an ear infection.  He started having very loose stools which I attributed that to the antibiotic, but the loose stools have continued after finishing the meds.  I brought it up at his 1 yr check up, and asked if it could be the cows milk.  (I read that cows milk tends to do the opposite though)  Our pediatrician thought it was probably more a lingering issue from the antibiotic.

That was 3 weeks ago.  The loose stools have continued and last night DS had diarrhea in the middle of the night so bad that it came out of his diaper.  HE NEVER poops at night!  We also never have leaks, so this was unusual.  The only thing I can think of is that I gave DS more cows milk yesterday and less BM.  He was only getting 1 cows milk bottle per day, but he had 2 ? bottles of cows milk plus milk in a sip cup with meals.

I am lactose intolerant, and I get diarrhea when I drink milk.  Our pedi says that lactose is present in BM too and that it is unusual for a baby to be lactose intolerant, but is it different than the lactose in cows milk?

I plan on trying the lactose free whole milk, but I thought I would see if anyone could offer any advice or experience.

TIA!

  • DD didn't react well to whole milk either. She would have diarrhea and vomit all over the place whenever she drank it. I switched her to lactose free milk and she's been doing great with it.

  • maybe the transition to whole milk was too fast and it upseted his tummy (including the factor that he was on antibiotics).

if you want scientific facts, you can send a sample of poop to the lab in search for sugar, and might confirm lactose intolerance.

My DD had sort of similar experience but when introducing solids, we went to lactose free and soy milk for a while, while holding on solids and then slowly came back to normal formula.

Oh and she was also on probiotics to help her build her intestinal flora (sp?) back again. And always made transitions from one milk to another that lasted 2 weeks.. (waaay slow, but it helped)

    GL!

  • Ds sounds similar to your story. We also bf for a year and transitioned to whole milk. He began having exclusively runny diapers and developed a horrible diaper rash. I asked our pedi if she thought it could be related to the milk, and they told me it was just normal diaper rash. DS also NEVER pooped at night. He began to wake up screaming in pain from the horrible rash the poop was giving him. The mmoment he would use the bathroom, he would begin screaming in pain. I knew in my gut that it was not normal diaper rash and i switched him to lactose free milk. It was much better but he was still having occasional loose stools. He is now on soy milk. I would say talk to your pedi but trust your mommy instinct.

  • Thanks ladies.  I think I will give lactose free a try and see what happens.

  • Are you giving him regular whole milk or organic whole milk? I asked because around 12 months when I was switching DD from BM to cow's milk, she had diarrhea for about a week. When I switched to organic milk, she was fine. I waited about a month or so, and slowly incorporated the regular milk, and she's been fine since.
