Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

won't sit in the cart!!

My 17 month old will not stay in the cart for very long at the store. After about 10 min. she tries to stand up and get out. I try to involve her in the grocery shopping by letting her put the fruit in the bags, help put stuff in the cart and hold the list. I talk to her and point out different things, but she wants to walk. If I let her out of the cart I make her hold my hand or help push the cart, but eventually she runs off. When I try to put her back in the cart she stiffens up and screams! I tell her that if she doesn't stay with mommy then she has to ride. She usually listens...until we get to the store. Anyone else have this problem and what do you do?

  • Stickers.

Stickers saved my life. DD has her hands busy, her mind occupied.

I keep my shopping trips to 30 minutes, tops. I go once a week. She has no choice, and has to sit in the cart. One day I brought some stickers along and - tada, problem solved.

    At least for now :)

  • Maybe I'm just lucky, but our grocery star has a cart with a car attached to the front of it so she can sit and play in that while I shop.  I dread the day it's not available. Haha!  I also have a snack for her and sometimes if she see's something I just give it to her because she will forget about it by the time we leave.

This for me too. I will definitely have to try the sticker idea! For now, I can usually hold him over with snacks or him holding things for me as I put them in the cart. 30 minutes tops, though!

  • I take a snack. I tell him if he is good and can sit and have no tantrums he can have a "treat". Something he doesn't usually get. Works like a charm, haven't had problems since.
