Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Eating 3 solid meals a day - Formula question

I BF DS until he was 7 months old.  While he was BF'ing, the most he would take from a bottle was 4 oz.  Once we switched to formula, he still does mostly 4oz bottles, except his first bottle of the day is 6oz.  Now he's eating 3 solid meals a day and usually he will have some snack stuff too, but he's on average drinking 14-16 oz of formula.  I'm sure that's because he's eating so much regular food.  I just wanted to see if others are experiencing the same and what you are doing to get enough liquids in and how many ounces of liquids does a 9 month old need?  (His 9 month appt isn't until next week)  He doesn't really drink from a sippy cup.  I've tried to give him one since he was 6 months old, but he just chews on it.

  • I have one suggestion about the sippy cup.

Liam did not get how to drink out of a sippy until I took the valve out.  With the valve out the liquid was able to flow more freely and he realized that water was supposed to come out.  After a week or so of him using the sippy without the valve (and making a mess!) I put the valve back in.  When the liquid wouldn't flow out like normal he tried sucking on it and was able to drink.

  • Thanks, I will try that.  I did buy one cup that has a straw instead of a "sippy" type top, and he's kind of got the hang of that, he's taken maybe 10 sips off of it in the last month.  So I guess that's progress.  lol
  • Ours get alittle less than 28oz a day. 4 bottles of 7 oz formula and 3 solid meals mostly equaling up to 6 tablespoons of baby food at each of their 3 meals.  The ped said they would back away from the bottle when they had enough to eat.. so far, they haven't.

  • DD eats 3 solid meals and gets about 20oz of formula a day- so similar to your LO.

It seems like such a struggle to get her to drink her formula these days.
