RTF formula question

Okay I know this is a dumb question so please forgive me. I EBF but DS has a milk protein intolerance and we are going to try using Similac Alimentum  to see how he responds. I have only ever used formula in powder form with my DD so I am not really sure how the RTF works. Do you heat it up? What are the benefits? Does it need to be refrigerated? I have seen it sold in 8 oz individual bottles and also in a 32 oz bulk bottle. Which would be better? Thanks for any insight! :)

RTF has to be refrigerated after the container is opened and generally, used within 48 hours.

It's just personal preference between RTF and powder.  We buy the 32oz bottles since the formula we use doesn't come in 8oz bottles.

  • I only use rtf

It comes in 32 oz cans and once the can is opened the formula needs to be used within 24 to 48 hours (you have to look at your spefic formula) and refrigerated.  I usually open the can and pour into to bottles which are used within 24 hours...once the can is opened all formula whether it is still in the can, another container, or in bottles has to be refrigerated.

If your child does not like cold milk you have to heat it up. I just put the bottle into a mug of hot tap water.

You can buy RTF in 8 oz cans for many formulas and that can just be opened, and poured into a bottle and used.

Once taken out of the fridge it must be used within 2 hours.  If it has been drank at all by the baby it has to be used within 1 hour.

  • dd is on alimentum for her milk protein intolerance. i love it in ready to feed u just keep it in the fridge heat and serve. also the rtf alimentum is corn free we started with the rtf to make sure corn wasnt what dd was allergic to like dh was as a baby.only down side is that when ur not at home u have to carry an extra bag or container that keeps it cold like with expressed breast milk. the powder works great too and is less expensive considering its $10 per 32oz of rtf and 25-27 for powder depending on the store target & walmart lower cost supermarket much higher.

  • I use the RTF Similac Advance and love it..so convenient. I say get the 8 oz ...I can use the first 4 oz  and then  refrigerate the other half and then warm it by putting the bottle in a cup of hot water.
