Preemies

I guess I'm "new"! I have a 34 weeker due to IUGR. What milestones are babies supposed to hit and when? I was reading somewhere that they should be smiling around 2 months..is that right? I know with him being a Preemie it could be longer for him to get to certain milestones. I guess I never really thought about it until I read that article, and now I'm feeling a little sad. I don't know anyone who has ever had a Preemie before so no one I know can really relate to me. My boyfriend's cousin had a girl in Nov. (our boy was born in Feb.) and she came over the day. She was all smiles and in the early stages of crawling. Knowing that it could take my baby longer to get there breaks my heart. I can't wait until the day he recognizes my voice and smiles at me :(

  • I have the Week to Week The first year book.  On ds's due date I started to read week one.  It gives me an idea where ds should/could be.
  • Milestones will be calculated by adjusted age. Your baby is still really young to be smiling yet. I'd give it a few more weeks. My ds was in the NICU in southern Indiana. What hospital were you guys at?

Since he was IUGR we were seeing a specialist across the river in Louisville, KY. When my OB and the specialist decided his environment became too hostile and it would be best to deliver him, my OB suggested our specialist deliver him because Kosair Children's Hospital has nurses who are more comfortable with preemies. So he was in the NICU over there. However, our original plan was to deliver him at Floyd Memorial Hospital.
