My dd is almost 2 and I had hoped to get rid of the pacifier by now but alas, it is still here. Anyone with an almost 2 year old who has successfully weaned from the paci recently? She doesn't have it while she is awake but will not fall asleep without it. Need suggestions...
EDIT: I should also mention that dd is obsessed with the paci. Like, visibly excited and relieved when it appears.
Re: paci
My DS was the same way, over the top excited about his paci and he would have it in his mouth 24/7 if we let him. I generally made him leave it in the car if went out somewhere and would try and get it out of his mouth for at least a couple hours every day while awake but he HAD to have it for sleeping.
He has now been 100% paci-free for 6 nights/days now! We did the "Bye-Bye Binky" method (google it), which basically came down to snipping the tip of it off little by little over the course of a week till there was virtually nothing left. Once it was about half-way gone it was difficult for him to keep it in his mouth and voluntarily started leaving it behind most of the time if he was playing around the house. After about week of this we just took it way. The first few nap/bedtimes were a little rough but he actually never cried about it, he was just really wound up and had a hard time settling down to sleep. The first night it took him an hour and 45 mins to fall alseep, but again he never actually cried, he was just talking and playing in his crib.. He would ask for it and we just said "Bo-bo (his word for it) is all gone. Bo-bo done." He did skip a nap once on day 3 but is pretty much back to his norm now at 6 days out. He still asks maybe twice a day for it and we just repeat, "Bo-bo all gone. Bo-bo done," and he seems to move on quickly from it.
Honestly, we made it up in our heads that it was going to be this huge, awful ordeal and it wasn't at all. Figure out a game-plan and stick to it.
DD is almost 2 and we took away the paci in January. My DD was the same as yours, only using it before bed/naptime, but super obsessed with it! So we knew we had to get rid of it. And I definitely think it was the right time. We did the "snip the tip" method. DD looked at it sadly and said, "pa-fire broken". The first 2 nights were a lot of crying and then the rest of the week was so/so. Naps were tough for a good 3 weeks. But now she's fine.
We even found a pacifire when cleaning her room the other day and she was able to throw it away when I asked her to. She didn't even try putting it in her mouth. I am so glad we got rid of it when we did. I would have liked to get rid of it earlier, but what's done is done! And she seemed so proud when she threw that paci away.
