Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

cereal

When did you stop giving LO baby cereal? The box says it's good to give it until age 2, but of course Gerber is going to say that, they want everyone to buy their cereal for 2 years! We just continued to feed it to DS without thinking, because we had it around. But now the box has run out and we're like... does he really still need it? When you stopped giving it, what iron-rich foods did you give to make sure they were getting enough iron and everything else that the cereal was supplying?

...I think there's a number of things we've kept doing just because we've been doing them, even though DS is probably growing out of it... maybe a little baby turning to toddler denial...

Re: cereal

  • We stoped giving it to him around 6-7 months.  Right when he started eating real food.

  • probably just over 12 months or so, as soon as i could tell he was eating enough of our table food/jarred food. he was eating less and less of it out of choice thought. Finally he just didn't enjoy it and we stopped

  • With DD it was a guarentee food- meaning if she wouldn't eat something for dinner, we knew she would eat that.. so we kept it around until about 2 months ago..

She now eats regular oatmeal.. and loves it.

  • My pediatrician recommended that I continue to feed him the baby cereal through at least two years.  Her reasons were the fortification and need for "non-empty" carbs.  My friend in Canada still uses it when she makes pancakes for her 4 year old to make them a little healthier.

  • We stopped at the same time we stopped purees.  Now she eats regular cereal.

Now that's a great idea (that I shall steal LOL)!!!

Georgia stopped eating puress probably around 9-10 months or so.....she discovered "real" food -- toast, Cheerios...things that she could feed herself & chew....and she refused cereals after that.

In terms of iron, she loves meatballs and beans (kidney beans, chick peas, black beans etc.) and she also gets her vitamin drops w/iron every morning in her sippy cup.
