Lab results? help please! what do you think?

I had my routine pap last week at my ob/gyn and I am also going to get in IUD so they screaned for 2 STD's (I can't remember the two she said).  The Dr. called today but I missed the call, the message the nurse left said, "I'm calling to inform you about some lab results."  My question:  Do they call if everything is negative?  I've never been tested for STD's before as I've only had one partner, but I'm pretty sure I don't have one.  I didn't leave a urine or blood sample.  What do you think???  TIA!

  • THey can call for neg results or for abnormal cells (not STD related). I wouldn't get worked up. I made the mistake of getting worked up before over something similar and got into a fight with my DH and it was all a misunderstanding. Good luck.

  • I have found that when the nurse calls (instead of the doctor), it's usually negative.

  • I've never had an abnormal pap--but I have had times where they call and leave a similar message (our OB uses an automated system--the nurse leaves the number on your machine and you call in) and the results have been normal.

Then I've had paps and not heard anything about the results until I'm in a routine visit and my OB would say "oh by the way your pap was normal."

So I wouldn't stress too much.

  • My doctor called to tell me everything was normal after a pap.  I wouldn't worry too much about it.

  • the office I work at it depends on the doctor and what they've asked their nurse to do.  To over-generalize I'd say negative results are relayed over the phone and positive results are relayed by appt (they call and ask you to come in and be seen to go over the results).  The is definitely not always the case, but an over-generalization.

  • I would not worry.  In my state they automatically screen for STDs while you are pregnant so I bet you have been screened before without even realizing the test was being done.
