I think she means it's pronouced the same way...the "kaya" rhymes with "riah"... so instead of it being pronouced Ma-kay-uh, she wants people to know it's Muh-kai-uh. 

In other news....You're from Seward?! I'm in Seward RIGHT NOW.... small world.

You don't. I've seen and heard some pretty off the wall names; in general, in spelling and in pronunciation in my first year teaching alone. But I'm....really still trying to figure this one out. I guess if you break the k apart....no...I don't know. This little girl is going to be very confused...

And here I am, 7 minutes later...still trying to figure out how this works.

I understood it as rhyming with Mariah. Like PP said, the kaya would rhyme with riah, instead of pronounced kay-uh.
