Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Would you give shots if LO is sick?

I have my DDs 15mo check up on Thursday and I'm debating if i should go ahead with the shots or not she has a little cold no temperature or anything just a runny nose and cranky. At her 12mo appt we skipped the shots (came back 2wks later) but she had a fever and cough, not sure what to do this time. Did you give your lo shots with a mild cold? did it get worse or nothing happened?

Re: Would you give shots if LO is sick?

  • DS had his 12 month shots with a runny nose, but like your LO, no fever.  His cold didn't get worse but it was the tail end of it.  No harm in calling and seeing what the ped thinks.

    Hope all goes well!

  • I'm pretty sure my DD's Pedi doesn't do shots if they're sick. However, if they did I would wait. I know how upset they make her and sometimes they knock her out. I wouldn't want her to be even more out of it. However, everyone's LO's are different. I would base it off of how they normally react to shots.

  • I would go ahead with them if it is only a cold and no fever.

  • If it's a mild cold with no fever and no earache, then yes I would go ahead with the shots.

  • no doctor that i know of will do the shots if LO has a fever and most will err on the side of caution and not do it if at all sick. Why take a chance?I would wait

  • fever = no shots.
  • As long as she has no fever I probably would. You can always ask at the appt if they would recommend getting them or waiting till symptoms subside.
  • I personally would not give the shots. Their little immune system is already fighting something. If it is a live virus than I would skip for sure. You can always go back when LO is better. I will say that I am also the mom that won't give more than 2 shots in one appointment. We spread them out pretty good. She is up to date (with the exception of chicken pox shot, we are waiting until she starts school) on all of her shots and has done well. No reactions from any and I think it is because we did not push too many at once and we did not get them if she was not feeling 100%.

  • DS had just gotten over croup when we did his 12 mos shots.  no fever so they did them.

  • Our pedi wont do shots if they have a temp over 100. I was just at the pedi today for DD's 15 month checkup- DD had a 100.8 temp and an ear infection- who knew- she was acting perfectly fine, so pedi said no way- and we go back in 2 weeks, hopefully they will do them then. Your pedi should make the call at the appt.
