I like to sing to my 18 month old but I don't know any songs other than "you are my sunshine". When he gets upset during the night I sing a song to calm him, I usually make up songs that are really stupid, and I mean really stupid.
Does anyone know any good songs? Not sure how I will know how the melody goes but thought I would ask any ways.
Thanks!
Re: SINGING TO YOUR TODDLER
I put a radio in my DD 's room and bought Jewel's lullaby collection. We sing along to some of the songs or sometimes I put on what I like for bedtime (Nora Jones, Michael Buble, ect.)
I sing hush little baby or twinkle twinkle at night.
Day, itsy bitsy spider (play along with hands), Old mc donald (she loves the animal noises and I pick ones she knows)
Itsy, bitsy spider
Twinkle Twinkle
Ring around the rosie
ABCs
My husband says he feels like he lives in a musical. He also says that I need to stop being our son's jukebox. That said, a few of our faves are:
Wheels on the Bus (he makes the round motion with his hands when he wants to hear it)
Baby Sharks (he makes the shark sign when he wants to hear it)
Itsy Bitsy Spider (uses his fingers to show the spider)
Where the Wild Things Are (not a song, but he requests that I "say" the book by roaring then clapping)
Songs that I sing on my own for him (outside of his requests):
Peter Pan (You Can Fly, Following the Leader)
Erie Canal
Clementine
I've Been Working on the Railroad
ABC's (forward and backward ... it's an experiment and sadly our soothing song)
Toothbrush Song (tune of Three Blind Mice)
Deck the Halls (even now because he sings along)
... and quite a few others. These are my favorites of the month.
If you don't know ALL the lyrics, who cares. And if you're really wanting to get it "right" just google the song name + lyrics.
We do Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Mary Had a Little Lamb, Down by the Bay, Old MacDonald Had a Farm....
I first started doing "The Itsy Bitsy Spider" with DD when I was drying her off after baths and during diaper changes to distract her. Now it's her favorite. She "demands" we sing it constantly, she will walk up to me jibber jabbering away (it sounds like she's trying to say itsy bitsy) and doing the hand motions.
LOL!!
I LOVE THIS!!!!!!!
I LOVE THIS!!!!!!!
We have all of the collections. Two of them I got from attending classes, the rest of them I bought on Amazon. They are about the only things we listen to. I also sing lullabies from different movies -- "Stay Awake" from Mary Poppins, "Baby Mine" from Dumbo, etc. I'm a big musical fan as well, so I sing love songs like "If I Loved You" from Carousel and "Till There Was You" from The Music Man.
Just have fun with it. Sing what you like. Go to the library and find a kids CD that you and your child can learn together. We sing so often that even at 17 months old, Curly is now initiating songs like Twinkle Twinkle and ABCs (as well as several from Music Together) and they're recognizable even to strangers.

I"m sure there are others, but I can't think of them. Do web searches for children or toddler songs. Often times you can find them with the music as well. Sesame St. also has cute CDs out with classic children's songs that may help jog your memory. Even a you tube search I'm sure could bring some to mind. My songs are all really eclectic from when i was little, to show tunes to some classical tunes as well that I didn't list.HTH
