Cloth Diapering

How many CD's should I register for...Realistically!

Help....I have spent hours poring over cloth diapering sites trying to figure out which direction I should turn. Does anyone have any advice on how many CD's I should register for if I plan on doing laundry every 1-2 days for a newborn? Also, the brands I have been looking at are the following:

 Bum Genius

Soft Bums

Flips

G-Diapers- for travel

I know I should register/plan on using more than one brand to see which ones work the best. I am just concerned that I won't have enough and I will be super stressed out. I am also in the market for any personal recommendations for preferred brands and why?

Please help!!!! We are expecting a little girl in July and I need to get my registry started!

Thanks!!!

Re: How many CD's should I register for...Realistically!

  • Someone (sorry forgot who) posted this chart last night and I saved it:

Wash Daily  Every 2 days  Every 3 days
    Up to 6 Mos.  10-12 20-24  30-36
    6-12 Mos.  8-10 16-20  24-30
    12-24 Mos.  6-8 12-16 18-24
    Potty Learning  2-4 4-8 6-12

    Mom to:
Miles (6 year old Maine C00n mix), Boots (5 year old Lab mix), Darla (4 year old GSD/Collie mix), Frankie (1.5 year old DSH mix), Peanut (15 months old - 09/11), and Bean (arriving Feb 2013).
  • I personally do not recommend that you register for CDs. You might end up stuck with loads of diapers that don't work for you. Maybe you could do a newborn trial (like at Jillian's).

  • To be honest I am having 2 very small showers and we aren't really planning to register for a ton of things. The cloth diapering systems are one of my main interests for the registry because to me it would be a lot easier  to register for this and have friends/family go in on it vs. us just buying them outright, especially if the particular brand/brands don't work out.  It seems like a pricey investment from the get go and the choices are overwhelming, but its something we are pretty dead-set on doing.

  • We live simply and CDs made up about 50% of our small-ish registry and we got a good amount. We are lucky to have friends that also CD and friends and family who are supportive of our lifestyle. Here is what my NB stash was:

Covers (We have more than needed)
    2 Thirsties Duo Wrap, snaps
    2 Thirsties Duo Wrap, Aplix
    1 Thirsties Cover  Size XS
    2 Bummis Super Brite
2 Prowrap/A Better World - I do not like these. No laundry tabs, they snag, and they didn't go around LO's stump well

    Fitteds
2 BG Bamboo Fitted, XS-- I love these. You can only get these used
    18 KL0s --we started w/ 6, but I loved them so much that I got 12 more
2 Happy Heiney Huggers Sherpa --these also are great

    AIOs
2 BG XS - I didn't like these and I sold them. I felt like we had blow outs almost every time.

    PFs (Osocozy)
6 preemie --  LO was only 6lb 12 and they were too small to really keep the poo in.
18 Infant size- Took some getting used to, but now I love them

    Pocket
1 Fuzzibunz, XS-- Poo would leak out the leg until LO beefed up some

Accessories: 2 wetbags, 2 laundry bags, 3 snappis, meconium and rash cream liners cut from a polar fleece blanket, wipes cut from old t-shirts, a squeeze bottle of water to wet the wipes

    ---

In terms of registry, I also put on diapers that are fancier than we would buy ourselves: wool covers, wool care items, Bum Genius Elementals, etc.

  • If you're looking at OS diapers, they won't fit during the newborn stage.  You might look at buying prefolds, fitteds, or BG AIOs in the XS size for the newborn stage if you want to CD in the first few months.  You'll need 24-36 newborn diapers (and several covers if you're using prefolds or fitteds) during this stage.

For the infant and toddler stage, 24 diapers would probably be sufficient.  If I were you, I'd forget the g-Diapers and just buy Flips.  You can purchase disposable inserts for these if you're looking for an easy solution for traveling.

You could do a diaper trial to test out various brands, but if you don't plan to do this, definitely register for more than one brand and style of diaper.  You might expect to love pocket diapers, for example, and find out that you hate them and prefer fitteds.  I don't have any brand recommendations for you, but you could read reviews and ask around on the board!

  • None. Seriously. I took a long time figuring out what to register for, and in the end, only one person bought us one diaper, and it wasn't even a style that was on our registry.

Since big stores like BRU and Target don't carry CDs, the registry was separate from that, so I think nobody even paid attention.
