Help: Eczema and itch relief??

DS has mild eczema since he was a few months old.  It's mostly on his back and behind his knees.  In the past few months it has really been irritating him to the point that he scratches and sometimes gets it raw!! :-(

We have been doing everything pedi says (no soapy bath- just plain dove soap... aquaphor... all F&C detergents... trim nails... benadryl- but we use that sparingly since it makes him groggy...etc)

We have an appt with a dermatologist on the 11th, but I was wondering if anyone here has any suggestions on how to ease his itching?!?!?!

TIA!

Re: Help: Eczema and itch relief??

  • My doc recommended petroleum jelly.  It takes the redness down pretty quickly and hydrates the skin.  HTH :)

  • Try some hydrocortizone cream. That helps take the itch out of my psoriasis.
  • dd used something prescribed when she was just a baby but i can't remember the name of it.  I was at the store the other day because dd gets real dry skin from the heat in the house.  Aveeno has a few different kinds and one is for eczema and itch relief.  I use a different one for just dry skin with no scent and I loadddddd it on at night time

  • I would be careful with the cortizone. My husband uses it for his eczema, but it is a steriod after all.

We use VaniCream on our daughter. My husband uses Cetephil. It is really hard to know what works because IMO eczema is a catch-all for loads of allergies.

Maybe try having you LO only wear cotton and no synthetic fibers for a week to see if that helps? My husband's eczema is partly a petroleum/synthetic fiber allergy.

  • Oh I feel your pain my DD was the same way, she would stratch until making her self bleed...she would wake up with her PJ's and bedsheet with blood, I was getting desperate for a solution...finally I made an appt,. for a pediatric dermatologist and he precribed to her like a steriod lotion, combination of ingredients that the pharmacist has to mix up, but it worked wonders...completely help with her eczema...she still gets it now and then and it is so controlled now. Her face was the worse...all red, itchy, raw, scaly...I don't know the name of the lotion (I have it at home). But I also use now the Gentle Naturals Baby Eczema Cream, her body seems to take it very well. I tried the aquphor, vaseline, all different lotions/cream...but the gentle cream seems to work the best for her.

  • I've heard that CeraVe is a miracle cream for it. Apparently you have to get the cream, not the lotion. I've never bought it so not sure the differences beyond that. I think the cream comes in a tub and the lotion is in a bottle. I think most people get it at Walgreens/CVS etc.

We use the Aveeno and it has helped a lot.

We tried this and it didn't work for us.  We had to get a prescription cream.  Sad  The pedi said creams are supposed to work better than lotions for ezcema.  We seriously tried everything!  Eucerine, Aveeno, Rosebud Salve, Vasaline, Aquafor, CereVa, Cetephil, Hydrocodizone, you name it we tried it.  I spent a small fortune trying everything and in the end a $10 prescription did the best.  Good luck!

  • California Baby Calendula Cream (in a jar, not the lotion) has been amazing. LO gets a lot of dry patches and this is the only thing that has worked apart from prescription steroid creams which I prefer not to use. DH uses it now for his eczema and its helped him a lot too.

  • cold cream... suggested by MIL, as she also has a delicate skin.

I tried a lot of expensive creams, they made little difference. Even DD gets all happy when I put her cream after bath.

  • I had eczema growing up and finally grew out of it.  Then this year I got it back REALLY bad!  It is worse then I remember.  My doc gave me a script for stronger Cortisone then OTC,  which I hate using especially when I know I will be playing with LO. It really didn't work for me.  Probably because i only used it after LO was in bed or I was at work.

I found that BabyGanics makes a moisturizing Eczema Care Cream.  This has helped my eczema tremendously and I love that it it's a non steroid cream.

  • Thank you, everyone!!  I will keep you posted on how it goes...

  • I didn't read through all of the replies, but another thing to try that I really like is Halo's special clothing called Technical Comfort.  My LO sleeps in it every night, and I love it!  It's approved by the national eczema association to reduce itching and irritation, and the fabric is so sort and comfy.
