I think the 4 month sleep regression is going to be the death of me

My twins are 21 weeks, born at 37w 1d.  Which means they are 4 months exactly, today, based on adjusted age. And we are smack dab in the middle of the 4 month sleep regression/wonder week 19/mental leap 4.

My babies that were good nighttime sleepers (they've always been terrible nappers) went from STTN with maybe one or two paci replacements, to bitching every 30 minutes some nights.  DS acts like the world is coming to an end when he rips his paci out and it's like, dude, you took it out.  If you want it, DON'T DO THAT.  Naps were short, but they went down easily.  Now it's a fight.  DS will scream in his crib, scream, kick and cry when I hold him, and scream in the swing, where he finally passes out.  Totally unlike my sweet boy who could fall asleep looking peacefully at his seahorse.

MoMs who have been through this and lived - any advice? Tips? Cocktail recipes?

  • Turbo = 1 Beer, 1 Smirnoff Ice. Put it in a very large glass and chug.

That's all I got. We did the 4 month wakeful for what seemed like 2 months and now I think we're doing a 6 month wakeful. They were up 5890r2879817 times last night for nothing. I'm going to lose it completely soon.

  • Don't have any advice, but I feel your pain. My DS's STTN seemed like such a tease, he finally got used to sleeping at night, and now he's back to waking up throughout the night. Once upon a time I had good nappers too, no more :( How long does this 4 month wakeful last??? Hope it gets better for you soon!

  • All I can say is that months 4-6 were the worst--they were hellish. Worse than when they were newborns b/c when they were newborns, you were running on adrenaline. By the time they're 4 months, you're exhausted. It starts with the 4-month wakeful, that goes on for weeks and then bleeds into the start of the 6-month growth spurt.
  • Oh...you ladies are scaring me.  One of my boys sleeps bad at night now, I dread the 4 month wakeful period.

  • I could have written your post myself.  Mine are 4 months adjusted and going though this same thing.  My daughter refuses to be left alone and will scream her head off if we aren't right next to her.  I can't even put her on her activity mat (she LOVED this and would play for 45 minutes by herself).  In addition, my former 1x up a nighter is now a 4-5 times up a nighter.  I'm so exhausted I thought I'd fall asleep on the way to work this morning.  This has been going on for a week now with my daughter.  My son hasn't started it yet.  On top of all this, they received immunization shots yesterday and SCREAMED the entire evening.  I'm at wits end....when will this end???  HELP!!!

PS.  I've read the Wonder Weeks and week 19's "fussy" period is to last 3 weeks....so help me.

  • I don't have any helpful advice but I will say this. We're well past that stage and I barely remember it now. Maybe it's because mine were NEVER good sleepers until about 7 months. But in all honesty, the first 6 months were an absolute blur. The first 3 or 4?? Seem almost nonexistant to me. I look at pictures and think, "Wow, they were so little - I barely remember them like that!" I think sleep deprivation is a huge part of memory loss. Stick out tongue

My month 4 was a b!tch for sleeping. I ended up completely redoing their routine. I was so desperate to figure out WTF was going on. I went from 6 bottles a day to 4 (4 hrs between). It took a while to adjust but when their 3rd nap of the day became a catnap (and now it's gone) their night sleep went back to normal.
