Question about nighttime weaning

Hi ladies.  I'm coming over from 9-12 because I think you might be better able to answer my question.  I currently EBF my DD and am working on weaning by her 1st bday.  Nighttime will be the last one I drop.  I nurse her to sleep now, but always put her in her crib drowsy but awake.  When I'm completely done, I want to give her a sippy of milk, read her a few books, then put her to bed.

Should I start to change my routine now?  I could nurse her, then read a book, then put her to bed, so it feels more like how it will be in a few months?  Also since it's lighter out longer, this might help with her sleeping in a room that's not completely dark.

Should I change the nursing routine now or just wait and change everything when I wean??  Thanks so much for the advice!!!

Re: Question about nighttime weaning

  • When I weaned DD from her last feeding I kept our routine EXACTLY the same except that I gave her a sippy of milk instead of nursing. However leading up to that we had worked on DD switching from BM to milk in her bottles and drinking her milk in a sippy. She had switched to 100% milk and no bottles before I dropped the last feeding. She barely seem to notice the change. The next step for us was getting rid of the bedtime sippy and just giving it at supper before her bedtime routine.

  • The one thing I'd add is (especially with cow's milk being the before bed drink) to start nursing THEN brushing teeth.  Then to bed.  The breastmilk isn't great for teeth overnight, but the cow's milk is even worse.  And having the added "event" between nursing and bed may further ease the transition.
