What moisturizer do you use for your LO?

Our DS has really dry skin-it's not exzema or psoraisis--just really dry, rough skin.

We use Johnson's baby lotion and even baby oil. I've even used my Bath and Body Works moisturizer and it doesn't do much.

It doesn't seem to cause him pain or itch--it just feels really rough. It's especially rough on his legs--I thought it could even be chafing since he still crawls around quite a bit.

Any suggestions for a baby-safe moisturizer?

  • My doc recommended good old petroleum jelly.  Works wonders!

  • We use CA Baby.  I've also heard that Cetaphil is good.  Make sure to apply after bathtime while the skin's still damp.

  • We use Body Shop's Buriti Baby body butter. It is a little pricey but ahhhmazing.

  • We use Johnson's, but DS doesn't have horribly dry skin. I've heard Aveeno is nice, and when DS was really small, someone gave us a sample pack of Wella, which was much thicker than usual baby lotion.

  • most commercial creams are filled with petroleum products, parabens, etc. and you want to stay away from them.  We use Earth Mama Angel Baby or just plain coconut oil or shea butter.
  • CeraVe cream in the tub.  best.stuff.ever.

My DS's skin sounds just like your LO's. Ped reccomended Eucerin Calming Cream and it works wonders!!

  • I had tried several things on DD and g8orell on here (a derm PA) recommended Cetaphil Restoraderm. It is awesome- rubs on really easily and her rough belly was gone in days.
  • Burt's Bee's buttermilk lotion, but when his dry skin REALLY flares up (due to the cold weather here) I use Triple Cream.

  • DD has mild eczema and we use California Baby super sensitive lotion 2x/day. Then we slather on a good coat of Aquaphor after baths. This routine was approved by DD's pedi and allergist and seems to work very well for us. On a side note, I also have eczema and I have been using the Cetaphil Restoraderm and I LOVE it.
  • Check out the Skin Deep database for safe products for your LO.  It is shocking how many terrible chemicals are in many of the mass-marketed brands.

We use episencial products since they are free of any harmful chemicals.  The soothing cream worked really well to help DS's raw red cheeks.

This.  DDs dermatologist says it's best since it has the least amount of ingredients.  If you do go with a lotion (we use Cetaphil for DS since he doesn't have eczema) make sure it is a scoop type rather than a pump.  Pump lotion contains much more water which causes the lotion to evaporate too quickly and not be effective.

  • I use California Baby products, the super sensitive daily lotion regularly and the calming cream when he gets the rough spots.  He gets really dry skin on the back of his calves, which I think is weird but DH and I both have dry skin so it's not shocking that DS has it too.  Anyway, the Calming Cream really works well.  It's pricey but you only need a little and one pot of it lasts months.

This is what we use too and it has worked wonders.  The pediatric derm recommended it.

  • Wow! Thank you for all the options!

I didn't know pumped-based lotions contain more water and therefore would be more drying!

    Interesting.
