Stuffing mouth...

DD has taken to stuffing her mouth when she eats.  I mean she puts chipmunks to shame.  She crams in cheese, fishies, eggos, fruit, everything.  She seems fine; she can breathe, chew and swallow.  But I don't know how to let her know that she doesn't need to eat her food real quick... it's not like she has a twin, a dog, or fellow prisoners to compete with.  lol :)

I keep telling her to finish what's in her mouth first.  I try to limit what's on her tray/plate.  Nothing works.

Thoughts? Ideas?  Tips?

TIA :)

Re: Stuffing mouth...

  • I always say, "Is it ironic that when DS stuffs a bunch of bananas in his mouth it makes him looke like a monkey?" Yeah, my little man does it too. I mostly just try to limit how much food I put in front of him.

Not to say this is safe, because it's not, but I also had a nephew who did this a lot and he REALLY stuffed his mouth full, it was over the top! Well he's 3 now and is doing just fine...

    Hopefully it'll pass!

  • Emmie started to do this a while back and I would hold my hand out and say, give me some of that and she would take some of it out of her mouth and put it in my hand. (Gross, I know) I would put it back on her plate (unless it was really nasty and slimy, then I'd just chunk it and give her a fresh piece on her plate). She's pretty good now, but if she stuffs her mouth I can tell her to take some out of her mouth and she will take some out and put it on her plate! GL with your little chipmunk! ;)
  • This phase will pass :-) She's not choking, she can breath, etc.  We just talk to DD and use the low tone, 'that's not the way' voice, then move on to a different topic.  We don't dwell on what she's doing.  I should say we don't dwell any more since she rarely does this any more.

  • DS eats like this. I just have to limit how much food I put on his tray at one time. Telling him to chew first just elicits laughter.
