What is proper tipping Etiquette

Ok- DH booked this way too expensive hotel (not exactly happy about it because it really isn't all that nice) but they have Vallet Service, which where we are it is cheaper for the vallet than to park and since we need the car several times during the day it just works out better.  BUT everytime I pull up they help me with what ever I am unloading and carry it up to my room.... Great right?  well not when you are on a budget and have no CHANGE!  DH has given out $20 in tips-- between the guy that unloads the cars, than another guy brings the bags up to the room-- and we did that twice.

So to prevent us from handing out our money like it is nothing or like we have a lot of it-- will someone please tell me how this works... I know you aren't supposed to tip them every single time they do something-- isn't that what they paid for hourly?

Re: What is proper tipping Etiquette

  • We usually take our stuff from them right there at the valet and tip about $2.  I don't know the protocol so maybe we're cheap as hell.

ETA: So we're just tipping for the car retrieval not for any bag handling.

  • Tell them you don't need them to carry it to your room for you. But if they do, then yes you would typically give them a couple of dollars.
  • I told them I didnt need help and they did it anyway-- I'm kinda annoyed by this.

Did they take the bags out of your hands? Because I would complain about that. Otherwise, how did they get your bags? If you have stuff in your trunk, open it yourself and get the bags yourself.

That came out kind of harsh. I just mean don't let them touch your stuff. If they take it from you, politely ask that they give it back to you. If they refuse, speak to a manager.

  • We carry our own bags and tip $2 to $3 for the retrieval of the car.
