Cloth Diapering

So you just let the stinky pee diapers sit in the pail until you're ready to wash them all?

I just started CD'ing my DS since I bought a LOT of diapers and built up a stash for DS 2 that's on the way. We only used 2 diapers yesterday and 2 today b/c of daycare but tomorrow will be using cd's all day. How many days can the stinky pee diapers sit in the pail? I was surprised how much WORSE pee diapers smell in cloth compared to sposies...whew that is a strong smell! haha

  • We do laundry every other day or every 2 days, but LO is younger and we use a lot more diapers. I haven't noticed a strong smell but they say if you leave the lid on a pail open to help air circulate the stink is less so I do that from time to time and dont notice a smell in the room. They also make pail deoderizers too you can use if that might help.

  • I wash every other or every third day (I went a little longer today since I washed mid-morning on Saturday.)

I don't really notice the diapers smelling that much, to be honest. Our pail is usually open -- I only notice it if it's got some poopy diapers in it.

I wouldn't leave them too long, you don't want to have anything, uh, grow.

  • Don't let them go more than two days. But they really shouldn't smell terribly unless they've been sitting a while (or you're maybe talking about an overnight dipe). Did you buy these new? If not, i would suspect some build up/ammonia problems.

  • I wash every other day.  I don't really notice any smell - actually, I noticed much more of a smell with sposies.  The pail gets a lot of air circulation so that helps.
  • Sorry, I should clarify the stink problem...it smells horrible/strong right when I took them off of DS. (Especially the overnight dipe.) I can't smell anything from the pail which is a hanging wetbag that isn't closed all the way. I guess I better do a load of laundry tomorrow night...I was just curious if that can make the dipes stink from sitting for too long. Sorry, I never really finished my question now that I read my post.

  • I do laundry every other day.  With the exception of his overnight diapers, I've never had a problem with stinky pee.  Are these new diaper you're using?

  • Nope, these are used. I did a warm wash and then a hot wash using homemade detergent and dried them in the dryer before using them on DS.

  • i wash every 4 days and don't have any problems...

i'd be worried if it were an amonia smell then you might want to strip them. especially since they came to you used, but if it's just a regular old pee smell that's fine...

  • When DD was FT diapers I washed every 4 days.  Now that we just have 1 overnight trainer a night I do it 1x a week.  We have a air cleaner next to the diaper can so I think it helps with any smell. ;)

  • Does your homemade detergent use regular soap?  This can cause a buildup which can cause the stinkies.  Did you strip the used diapers when you got them?
