Re: HypnoBabies vs. HypnoBirthing - whats the diff?

  • I read a book on HypnoBirthing, and we've done the homestudy course on HypnoBabies. Near as I can tell, they're just different "brands" of the same thing.

  • I used the Mongan Method HypnoBirthing and thought the book was great and cd so-so. DH & I did the Hypnobabies home study course and I thought the book that came with it was awful, just very repetitive and poorly written (honestly it was a struggle for me to finish the course). But it came with 8 CDs of Hypnosis tracks that we found very helpful; we're still using them to relax & fall asleep at night.

The techniques in both are pretty much the same; the main difference I saw was Mongan Hypnobirthing went into the history of how birthing has changed (which was really interesting!) and Hypnobabies has more CDs (the variety is nice when you're listening several times per day).

In labor I ended up using the deep breathing emphasized in both courses. I used the Hypnobabies CDs in early labor but after transition I couldn't really focus on the cues they teach.

  • I'm a HypnoBirthing instructor. Here are some stark differences:

    - HypnoBirthing is generally taught in person over 5 weeks, while Hypnobabies is generally a self-paced home study course that is significantly longer.

    - Hypnobabies incorporates some of the highlights of Bradley (though I'm not sure which, perhaps someone who did both could elaborate).

    - HypnoBirthing allows for students to have professionally led and personalized in-person hypnosis, which is beneficial for many reasons including troubleshooting techniques, model for how you should feel while in hypnosis, and more effective fear release (Does Hypnobabies do this? I'm not sure.).

    - HypnoBirthing emphasizes that women are socialized to fear childbirth, which leads to the Fear-Tension-Pain syndrome. Eliminating the fear stops this debilitating syndrome from playing out. In a HypnoBirthing class, considerable time is spent on this topic and students have an opportunity to release any fears about childbirth and/or parenting that may cause limiting thoughts during labor.

My personal opinion on Hypnobabies is that there are too many CDs. As a professional hypnotist, I think that it is important to find one that works for you and do that one over and over. Repetition is key to a quick induction. The HypnoBirthing CD that comes with the book is not the CD that most listen to while in labor, nor is it the CD that the Institute recommends for daily listening. There is a second CD that you get with the class (you can also find it online) and it incorporates all you need during labor on two tracks (track one is affirmations, track two is an imagery script that ties relaxation and comfort to the colors of the chakras).

Happy to answer any other questions about HypnoBirthing!

  • We took the HBorthing class and did the HBabies home study because we found it after the HBirthing class. We liked HBabies way better just because there were so many more prompts and scripts so you could find what worked best for you, plus, I  personally felt more soothed by Kerry's voice.

    - HypnoBirthing is generally taught in person over 5 weeks, while Hypnobabies is generally a self-paced home study course that is significantly longer. Or you can also attend a class that is not self-study and it is generally 5-6 weeks as well.. although some stretch to 8 weeks.

    - Hypnobabies incorporates some of the highlights of Bradley (though I'm not sure which, perhaps someone who did both could elaborate). Like Bradley, it teaches Fear-tension-pain cycle and how to break that, muscle and breath awareness, pregnancy and birth A&P, stages of labor, nutrition & exercise, baby care, breastfeeding, and societal conditioning/how to break it.

    - HypnoBirthing allows for students to have professionally led and personalized in-person hypnosis, which is beneficial for many reasons including troubleshooting techniques, model for how you should feel while in hypnosis, and more effective fear release (Does Hypnobabies do this? I'm not sure.). touch cues, self hypnosis, hypnoanesthesia, levels of hypnosis are taught as well.

In a HypnoBirthing class, considerable time is spent on this topic and students have an opportunity to release any fears about childbirth and/or parenting that may cause limiting thoughts during labor. Same as hypnobabies.

I use it to sleep when I am emotionally upset. :)

OTOH,  I have found that Hypnobabies works better for the clients (statistically) than Hypnobirthing. This is in my OWN experience working with these women and not a national stat. I am not convinced, yet, that it is the method, though. I am more inclined to believe that it is the effort and practice put forth by the individuals who are studying it...

Happy to answer any other questions about HypnoBirthing!

Again, I want to reiterate that that is only MY experience with the women I work with... And again, I am NOT convinced that it is Hbirthing that doesn't work - more likely, it is the women who didn't give the method the attention and study needed to make it affective. Does that make sense?
