Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Dreaded Bedtime

Duplicating a bit from a previous post, but my usually peaceful and easy-to-put-down DS is turning into a little bedtime terror. He screams at the mention of bedtime, although he used to love the snuggle and book time. He screams all the way up the stairs and throughout the bedtime routine, and for the last few weeks, has ended up crying himself to sleep (as he's doing right now). He's 20 months.

Anyone else have issues around this age? TIA!

Re: Dreaded Bedtime

  • We were just recently at the doctor and he's clear of ear infections. He has all of this teeth, so it's nothing there. Just at a loss for the cause. Maybe he's going through some sort of anxiety or separation anxiety?

  • Could be the separation thing but I think part of it could be the whole developing their sense of self & autonomy (right along with 'mine' and 'no')... my DD now tries to stall at bedtime at 19 months, asking for book after book after book & when we refuse to read any more (we seriously read her like 15 of them at least) then she asks for water over & over, ends up just playing with the straw in her mouth, etc...so I think she is trying to 'control' the bedtime so to speak... I try to humor her a little bit & usually she calms down if I give her a book or 2 and then the water a few times...

    GL!

  • Just wanted to say that I feel your pain. My DD has to cry herself to sleep these days, I miss my snuggle time with her! I guess it is just the toddler phase, she screams "NO NO NO!" every time I lay her down in her crib. That's just the way it is in this house Sad
