Baby Names

Caroline- WDYT?

DH and I are still fairly undecided on our girl's name and I was wondering what you all think of Caroline as it's one of our front runners.  Too popular?  If it's really popular where you are what region are you in?  Is everyone going to call her caro-lyn instead of Caro-LINE?  What NN are people going to try and call her?

Thanks for the input!

Re: Caroline- WDYT?

  • I really like it! I know two people with the name Caroline. One goes by the full name (no nicknames) and the other goes by Carrie.

  • I love Caroline! It is one of our top choices if we have a girl. I've heard Carrie and Carly as nicknames, but I love the full name best.

  • LOVE this name!! It is one of our two favorite girl names. I think it is classic and a name that suits a child, but also works well for an adult. I like the full name, but also really like the NN Carrie. As a teacher, I haven't had any or known of any students named Caroline/Carrie so that is definitely a plus! :)

I love Caroline.  I would pronounce it Caro-LINE; I've never heard anyone pronounce it Caro-lyn.  I don't know anyone named Caroline so I don't think it's popular around here.  However, I don't love any of the nn for it, but it's one of those names that probably will be shortened.  You could use Cara as a nn.

I agree with all of this. Gorgeous name! I know 2 Carolines and they don't have a nn.

  • I like it and know of none in our region (South).  I would call her Caro-Line and as for nicknames Lyn or Carol come to mind.

  • I'm from south jersey and I would say Caro-lyn.... I have one friend named Caroline and everyone calls her "C".

I don't hate the name but it's nms.

  • I like it a lot, but I admit I might accidentally pronounce it Caro-lyn, just because the only girl I ever knew with this name (spelled this way) pronounced it -lyn.

I like this name.  I know of one baby named Caroline, though I believe it is one of the more popular names being given in my state (I'm in Colorado).  I think most people pronounce it -line.

  • Hi,

I was just lurking and my name is Caroline pronounced Caro-line.  Carolyn is actually a totally different name.  I do ocassionally get called Caro-lyn when first introduced to someone, but people usually ask if it is Caroline or Carolyn if they are unsure.  I also don't have any nicknames.

    I hope that helps!

  • I love Caroline - if my last name didn't start with the syllable "LINE", it'd be at the top of my list.  I've known a Caroline with no nn, a Carrie, and a Carey.
  • It's a beautiful name!

  • Love it, would use it in the future.

I have a 9th grader at work named Caroline who goes by Care (pronounced just like the word, not Carrie).

  • I love it...unfortunately my not so favorite aunt is Carol.  So it is NOT an option. I Like carrie too...but she may think it is for her. Yes, she's that crazy :)

I'd go for it! I have taught 13 years at the HS level and never had a caroline! I know one on her way up though! She's 9!

  • I love the name Caroline, but I think it is going to be one of those names that sneaks on to the top 10 list very soon.  Up until this year I did not know anyone under the age of 20 with the name Caroline, but now I know of three newborn Carolines in my neighborhood and 2 more at the daycare.  I also saw that last week it was on the top 10 (#3) names of newborn infants born in NYC (google baby name scape for the site).  The website www.babynamewizard "name mapper" tab shows that Caroline is in the top #20 in several states on the east coast.  It is a beautiful name, but if you are worried about your little one being one of 3 or Carolines in her class this is probably not a good choice.  If you are not worried about it, then go for it!
