Baby Names

The Same Name Game

This a theory because I don't have the problem, but if it was to come up I am curious what the etiquette is?

So you come up with the perfect name before you have a kid and a sibling picks that name for their kid, who is born before you are even pregnant, what do you do?

It is always the case that you just choose another name? Or can you name your kid the same name? And does it depend of the commonness of the name? Like is it ok for the aiden craze or always popular names like Joesph/Michael/Christopher to have the same name as a cousin? But is it not ok for less popular names like Dennis or Thomas to be both named the same as their cousin?

I used boy names on a whim for the example to make it easier. I hope it isn't too complicated sounding.

Re: The Same Name Game

  • Whoever has their baby first, gets to name it first.

Personally, I wouldn't use the same name that one of siblings used. There are too many great names out there for a family to squabble over one.

  • Who ever has the baby first, gets the name.

My boyfriends sister had this problem with me. She wasn't pregnant yet, but she had told me the names she liked for a girl (Callie & Lanie). Well, I had told her that if we were having a girl we would name her Elena and nickname her either ellie or lena and she got all pissed off saying "That's too close to lanie". Luckily her husband (who is also my cousin) told her "Sweetie, we're not even pregnant yet. They can name their baby whatever they choose" They also got pissed off because someone else took the name Callie (someone that her H works with.)

They are now pregnant again, and are not sharing names (or atleast not their girl name they like) Which is completely fine, but if I end up with a BFP, then I may need to know lol

  • It's definitely a hard one, but I have to agree with what others said:  Whoever has the baby first gets to use the name.  We have a family name in mind for a future child, and a friend threw it out there that it's one of "her" names.  Well, we aren't even trying to concieve, so we don't lose any sleep over it at this point.  My friend isn't pregnant either, so I guess we'll cross that bridge when we get there.  There are so many beautiful and great names out there that it's not worth a quarrel.

  • in my early 20s I loved the name Grace Margaret. (grace is my g-ma, and Margaret was my 3rd grandma and other grandma's MN) Well my brother goes and gets married and has a kid...and her name is Grace Rose.  I'd never told anyone I like Grace Margaret...and I'm glad they have it now. It's way too popular for my tastes!

It all works out in the end!

  • Personally, I wouldn't ever use a name my sister used. There are plenty of other fish in the sea, so to speak. If it's a family name, though, I could see one using it as a FN and one using it for a MN. My sister has long said she wants to use our dad's FN for a kid's FN, and I want to use it for a MN. We're fine with that, but I would never be all "oh, I'm using it as a FN now."

  • I'm not sure how it would work in my family. I would proably never use a name that my cousins and or either of our siblings have used, but DH's uncles have Paige, Anna and Maggie, names that I love. We've only met them once. I would definitely use those names.
